The German automaker said the recall covers 2008-2011 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 SAV, and X6 SAV models that have eight- or 12-cylinder turbocharged engines. The recall comes after BMW found at least 102 cases of pump failures worldwide — including two engine-compartment fires. BMW said it is unaware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the condition. The auxiliary pump helps cool the turbocharger during some driving conditions and in some cases can fail, causing the circuit board to overheat. That could lead to a fire. BMW said in most cases drivers will be alerted by a warning message on the instrumental cluster during driving. BMW first discovered the issue in June 2009 on test vehicles. In April 2010, a smoldered electrical cable of the water pump was found on a BMW-owned vehicle. The company set up a task force in May 2010 after two customer vehicles reported burned engine compartments. Dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump and will be notified next month. Owners will be notified starting next month as well. The front driveshaft attachment bolts may not have been tightened to specification. If the bolts were not tightened to specification, they may become loose. If the bolts loosen, it could lead to a loss of power to the front wheels and ultimately a vehicle breakdown, increasing the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft attachment bolts free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2011. 11V-476 AUGUST 2011 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2002-2005 325i, 325xi, 330i, and 330xi vehicles manufactured from September 1, 2001, through March 1, 2005. Over time, resistance in the electrical contacts may cause one or more rear lamp functions (tail light, brake light, and/or turn-signal), within the vehicle's body panel, to stop working. Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions. This could cause a vehicle crash without warning. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2011. 11V-438 AUGUST 2011 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2009 X5 xDrive35d vehicles equipped with a diesel engine and manufactured from October 1, 2008, through June 12, 2009. The fuel filter heater, which is used for warming up the diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low outside temperatures, could experience an elect rical overload condition and become permanently activated. The fuel filter heater could remain activated even when the ignition is off and lead to a dead battery. The unit could also overheat, possibly leading to a vehicle fire. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel filter heater free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2011. 11V-441 NEWS: BMW to recall 241K cars over taillights DETROIT NEWS -- September 2, 2011 – BMW AG said it will recall 241,000 2002-05 3 Series sedans to replace potentially faulty rear lights. The models include the 325I, 325XI, 330I and 330XI built between 2001 and 2005. The decision came amid a lengthy government investigation into the issue — and more than 3,000 warranty claims. BMW said over time "resistance in the electrical contacts may cause one or more rear lamp functions (taillight, brake light, and or turn-signal)" to stop working. The problem is in the rear lamp unit in the vehicle's body panel. BMW told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that about 40,000 vehicles have already been repaired — and it estimates the number of faulty vehicles at less than 20 percent. BMW said there were no injuries or accidents as a result of the issues. NHTSA has been investigating the issue since April 2009 and upgraded the investigation in December 2009, when it said it had reports of 935 complaints or warranty claims of faulty lights. Last year, BMW told NHTSA the warranty claims over the issue had topped 3,000 — most from 2004 model vehicles. BMW issued a technical service bulletin in February 2007 to address the issue by adding ground wiring to the tail lamp assembly. In July of this year, NHTSA sought more information from BMW about the problem and held a meeting with BMW officials July 21. BMW will notify owners by October. Dealers will rework the electrical connections to the rear lamps MORE RECALL INFO: JUNE 2011 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2011 X3 passenger vehicles manufactured from April 27, 2011, through June 8, 2011. If the belt tensioner fails, there could be a sudden loss of power steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the engine belt tensioner free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during July 2011. 11V-332 NEWS: Feds look into BMWs that can roll away unattended YAHOO NEWS -- August 9, 2011 – U.S. safety regulators are looking into a problem with BMW automatic transmission shifters that can allow cars to roll away after drivers have left the vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday on its website that about 120,000 BMW 7-Series luxury sedans from the 2002 through 2008 model years could be affected. The inquiry could lead to a recall. The cars have electronic transmission shifters that are designed to automatically shift into park if the driver presses the button to turn off the engine. The agency says one driver complained to regulators about the problem, and the company has received additional complaints. No crashes or injuries have been reported. Regulators say they haven't found the cause of the problem. BMW says it's cooperating with the inquiry

The recall is expected to begin during January 2010. 09V-474 AUGUST 2009 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2009 Z4 30i and 35i vehicles manufactured between March 10 and March 19, 2009. A defective crimp connector in a belt tensioner wiring plug may lead to increased electrical resistance of that connection. Increased electrical resistance in that circuit could cause the safety belt tensioner to fail to deploy in a crash, possibly resulting in increased injury to the seat occupant. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a remedy or notification schedule. 09V-327 JULY 2009 -- BMW is recalling MY 2009 X5 and X6 vehicles. The rear brake discs may not have been manufactured according to specifications. As a result, a reduction in braking performance at the affected rear wheel could occur. In an extreme case, the affected rear brake disc could break resulting in a loss of braking at that wheel increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners and will repair the vehicles by inspecting the rear brake discs and, if necessary, replace them free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2009. 09V-255 JULY 2009 -- BMW is recalling 2,350 MY 2008 1-Series and 3- Series passenger cars. Incorrect crimp connectors may have been used on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring. As a result sufficient contact between the crimp connectors and the corresponding plug may not occur which could lead to an increase in the electrical resistance of that connection. The side air bag and/or the safety belt tensioner may not deploy in a crash and an occupantmay not be properly protected, increasing the risk of injuries or death. BMW will notify owners and repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2009. 09V-257 APRIL 2009 -- BMW is recalling 12 MY 2009 mini cooper convertible vehicles. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." The issue involves the vehicle tires and tire pressure label. The affected vehicles were equipped with 15-inch wheels instead of 16-inch wheels, therefore, the tire label does not correspond to the tires on the vehicle as required by FMVSS 110. Failure to follow proper vehicle loading specifications or misprint label could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the tires with 16-inch wheels free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during May 2009. Owners may contact BMW at 1-866-646-4772. 09V-143 DECEMBER 2008 -- BMW is recalling 28,450 MY 2007 and 2008 Mini Cooper S vehicles. The centrally located tailpipe extension protrudes slightly beyond the rear bumper and inadvertent contact may occur with a person's leg. If the tailpipe is hot when contact occurs, the person's leg can be burned. Dealers will replace the tailpipe extension with a new shorter tailpipe free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2009. . This recall was the subject of an Engineering Analysis, EA08-020, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 08V-657 NOVEMBER 2008 -- BMW is recalling 2,500 MY 2008-2009 M3 passenger vehicles with an optional double clutch transmission. The problem involves the double clutch gearbox. In a situation of rapid vehicle deceleration, the transmission software may perform a multistage downshift. In that situation, at low vehicle speeds, it is possible for the engine to stall increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reprogram the engine and transmission electronic control unit with updated software free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during December 2008. 08V595 MAY 2008 -- BMW is recalling 55 MY 2008 X5 sports utility vehicles for problems with the rear axle stabilizer (anti-sway bar). These vehicles were equipped with a sports-suspension stabilizer rather than a standard suspension stabilizer on the rear axle. In certain driving conditions, such as fast lane changes at high speed, the vehicle could experience an 'over-steer' behavior affecting vehicle handling and control, which could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the rear axle stabilizer. The recall is expected to begin during May 2008. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117 or via e-mail to CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com. 08V-170 AUGUST 2008 -- BMW is recalling 200,000 MY 2006 3 Series (sport seat), MY 2004-2006 5 Series (standard and sport seat), and MY 2004-2006 X3 passenger vehicles. A fatigue failure of the front passenger seat occupant detection mat can occur. If this happens, the front passenger air bags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated and the air bag warning lamp as well as the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp will be illuminated. In this situation the front passenger air bags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur and occupant protection provided by the system would not be possible. Dealers will rework the front passenger seat sensor mat so that external force application to the seat does not cause a crack to the mat. The recall is expected to begin during late September 2008. BMW will also extend the warranty on these vehicles to 10 years from first registration without any mileage limit. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417. BMW is extending the warranty to 10 years from first registration without any mileage limit to the following vehicles: MY 2006 6-Series, 3-Series (standard seat), MY 2004-2005 Z4, MY 2004-2006 7-Series, MY 2006 X5, and MY 2004-2006 5-Series (comfort seat). Under the extended warranty program, the occupant detection mat in a vehicle that experiences this specific issue will be replaced at no charge to the customer. This recall was the subject of an Engineering Analysis, EA08-001, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 08V384 NOVEMBER 2007 -- BMW is recalling 320 MY 2007 Mini Cooper and Cooper S convertible vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims." The standard requires that the tire size and corresponding tire pressure be indicated on the label and the label does not correspond to the actual tires mounted on the vehicle. Tire pressure that is too high can cause premature wear and tire damage which could lead to unfavorable driving conditions increasing the risk of a crash. Owners will be provided with new tire information placards and installation instructions. At the customer's option, a dealer can install the label for them. The recall is expected to begin during December 2007. 07V-533 OCTOBER 2007 -- BMW is recalling 29,250 MY 2006-2007 550I, 650I coupe and convertible and MY 2007 X5 4.8I passenger vehicles equipped with V8 engines. In conditions of below freezing temperatures combined with low humidity, it is possible for electrostatic discharge to occur at the fuel rails. If this were to occur, the engine electronic control unit (ECU) could be affected resulting in engine stalling. If stalling were to occur, the driver may not be able to maintain vehicle speed or accelerate and the power steering could fail increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will attach two ground cables in the engine compartment. The recall is expected to begin during November 2007. 07V-479BMW is recalling 6,595 MY 2007 X5 passenger vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 135, "Passenger Car Brake Systems." The cap of the brake fluid reservoir has been designed in order to recognize a low fluid level of the hydraulic brake system by triggering a red warning lamp in the instrument cluster. A switch that is attached to this cap could malfunction at high temperatures. If this happened, the red warning lamp in the instrument cluster would not be activated. Failure of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the cap of the brake fluid reservoir. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. 07V-391 NEWS: BMW Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Airbag Failures Extends airbag warranty for some models MORE RECALL INFORMATION: |
