NEWS: BMW is recalling certain model year 2014 MINI Cooper Hardtop 2-door vehicles; TIRES
Report Receipt Date: OCT 03, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V619000
Component(s): TIRES
Potential Number of Units Affected: 5,805

NOV 2014 -- BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 MINI Cooper Hardtop 2-door vehicles manufactured January 7, 2014, to July 21, 2014. The spare wheel may have been attached under the car with a nut that is not self-locking. Vibrations from driving may cause the nut to loosen, allowing the wheel to separate from the car. If the spare wheel separates from the vehicle, it could become a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the spare wheel securing nut with a self-locking nut, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2014. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

NEWS: BMW is recalling 176,000 vehicles from 2012-2014; Power Brake System
Yahoo News @ October 1, 2013

OCTOBER 2013 - German carmaker BMW is recalling 176,000 vehicles from the model years 2012 to 2014 over a problem with the power brake system.

The company says in rare cases an interruption in the oil supply to a part can mean the loss of power braking assist. The brakes will still work, but the driver would have to press harder on the pedal.

The recall covers 76,200 vehicles sold in the U.S.

Affected BMW models have four-cylinder, 2-liter gasoline engines and include 125i compacts; 320i and 328i sedans; 520i and 528i sedans; X1 28i, 20i and 16i SUVs; X3 20i and 28i SUVs; and Z4 28i, 20i and 18i sports cars.

The company says owners will be notified by mail if their car is among those that need to be brought in for repair. BMW says if the brake-assist power is lost, drivers should pull over and call roadside assistance

NEWS: BMW is recalling more than 134,000 5-Series cars in the U.S.
Yahoo News @ October 1, 2013

OCTOBER 2013 - BMW is recalling more than 134,000 5-Series cars in the U.S. because the rear lights can fail.

The recall, posted Friday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, affects 528i, 535i, 550i and M5 cars from the 2008 through 2010 model years.

The U.S. safety agency says that increased electrical resistance can damage connections to the lights. That could cause loss of tail, brake turn-signal or backup lights. The agency says the loss of lights can increase the risk of a crash, although BMW says in documents that it has no reports of any accidents or injuries from the problem.

The cars, made from March 1, 2007 to Dec. 31, 2009, will give drivers visual and audible warnings if the problem occurs, and unaffected rear lights will display to warn drivers behind the cars, BMW said in documents filed with NHTSA.

BMW doesn't believe the problem is an unreasonable safety risk, but the company decided to do the recall due to a precedent set by a 2011 recall for a similar problem, BMW said in the documents.

In August of 2011, BMW recalled 241,000 of its popular 3-Series cars to fix the rear light connections. That recall affected cars from the 2002 through 2005 model years.
Owners in the latest recall will be notified starting next month. Dealers will replace part of the rear lamp connections at no cost to customers.

SEPTEMBER 2013 - BMW is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2010 528i, 535i, 550i, and M5 passenger cars manufactured from March 1, 2007, through December 31, 2009. Over time, increased resistance at the taillight electrical contact points may cause damage to the ground terminal and housing of the connector resulting in an intermittent or permanent loss of functionality of one or more rear lamp functions (tail, brake, turn-signal, reverse). Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear lamp bulb carriers free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during October 2013. NEWS:  BMW is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 7-Series vehicles
NHTSA Recall Campaign ID# 12V502000 @  www.SaferCar.gov

OCTOBER 2012 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 7-Series vehicles, equipped with the Comfort Access option, and manufactured August 23, 2004, through July 24, 2008. The affected vehicles have an electronic key and an electronic connection between the gear shifter and the transmission (shift-by-wire) that automatically shifts the transmission to Park when the driver presses the Start/Stop button to shutdown the engine. If the driver presses the engine Start/Stop button 2 or 3 times within a short time interval, the system may shift the transmission to Neutral rather than Park. If using the electronic key (Comfort Access mode), there would be no protection from the ignition interlock that prevents key removal if the vehicle is not in Park. If the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in Neutral and the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may rollaway. Unattended rollaway incidents often result in a crash or cause injury to pedestrians attempting to stop or enter the vehicle or to other bystanders in the path of the vehicle. BMW will notify owners beginning in November 2012, but will not have revised software available to remedy the vehicles until March 2013.  Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.  12V502000

OCTOBER 2012 --  BMW is recalling certain model year 2013 M5, M6 Coupe, and M6 Convertible vehicles, manufactured from July 19, 2012, through September 11, 2012. Due to a manufacturing process error, the tolerance between the engine oil pump's drive shaft and the pump's rotor was not within specification. As a result, the pump's driveshaft could separate from the rotor. Separation of the pump's driveshaft from the rotor could lead to a sudden loss of oil pressure causing the possibility of complete engine failure, resulting in an engine stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the oil pump, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2012. NEWS:   BMW recalling 32,000 vehicles over engine fire risks

DETROIT NEWS -- November 1,  2011 – BMW AG said Saturday it is recalling 32,000 vehicles to replace potentially faulty electric auxiliary water pumps that can overheat and cause a vehicle fire.

The German automaker said the recall covers 2008-2011 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 SAV, and X6 SAV models that have eight- or 12-cylinder turbocharged engines.

The recall comes after BMW found at least 102 cases of pump failures worldwide — including two engine-compartment fires. BMW said it is unaware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the condition.

The auxiliary pump helps cool the turbocharger during some driving conditions and in some cases can fail, causing the circuit board to overheat. That could lead to a fire. BMW said in most cases drivers will be alerted by a warning message on the instrumental cluster during driving.

BMW first discovered the issue in June 2009 on test vehicles. In April 2010, a smoldered electrical cable of the water pump was found on a BMW-owned vehicle.

The company set up a task force in May 2010 after two customer vehicles reported burned engine compartments.

Dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump and will be notified next month. Owners will be notified starting next month as well.

NEWS:   BMW to recall 241K cars over taillights

DETROIT NEWS -- September 2,  2011 – BMW AG said it will recall 241,000 2002-05 3 Series sedans to replace potentially faulty rear lights.

The models include the 325I, 325XI, 330I and 330XI built between 2001 and 2005.

The decision came amid a lengthy government investigation into the issue — and more than 3,000 warranty claims.

BMW said over time "resistance in the electrical contacts may cause one or more rear lamp functions (taillight, brake light, and or turn-signal)" to stop working. The problem is in the rear lamp unit in the vehicle's body panel.

BMW told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that about 40,000 vehicles have already been repaired — and it estimates the number of faulty vehicles at less than 20 percent. BMW said there were no injuries or accidents as a result of the issues.

NHTSA has been investigating the issue since April 2009 and upgraded the investigation in December 2009, when it said it had reports of 935 complaints or warranty claims of faulty lights.

Last year, BMW told NHTSA the warranty claims over the issue had topped 3,000 — most from 2004 model vehicles. BMW issued a technical service bulletin in February 2007 to address the issue by adding ground wiring to the tail lamp assembly.

In July of this year, NHTSA sought more information from BMW about the problem and held a meeting with BMW officials July 21.

BMW will notify owners by October. Dealers will rework the electrical connections to the rear lamps

The safety recall is expected to begin during July 2011.   11V-332

NEWS:   Feds look into BMWs that can roll away unattended

YAHOO NEWS -- August 9,  2011 – U.S. safety regulators are looking into a problem with BMW automatic transmission shifters that can allow cars to roll away after drivers have left the vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday on its website that about 120,000 BMW 7-Series luxury sedans from the 2002 through 2008 model years could be affected. The inquiry could lead to a recall.

The cars have electronic transmission shifters that are designed to automatically shift into park if the driver presses the button to turn off the engine. The agency says one driver complained to regulators about the problem, and the company has received additional complaints.

No crashes or injuries have been reported. Regulators say they haven't found the cause of the problem.

BMW says it's cooperating with the inquiry

A switch that is attached to this cap could malfunction at high temperatures. If this happened, the red warning lamp in the instrument cluster would not be activated. Failure of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the cap of the brake fluid reservoir. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. 07V-391

NEWS:    BMW Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Airbag Failures

Extends airbag warranty for some models

ConsumerAffairs.com -- August 13, 2008 -- BMW is recalling 200,000 cars and small SUVs because the front passenger-side airbag could fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that in some of the recalled BMWs it is possible that "the front passenger airbags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur."

The recalled BMWs include the 2004 to 2005 5-Series standard and sport seat models, the 2004 to 2006 X3 and the 2006 3-Series with sport seats.

NHTSA reported on its Web site that the passenger-side airbags can deactivate because of wear associated with a passenger getting in and out of the vehicle.

"Depending on the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit, small cracks have developed in the (sensor) mat. If this occurs, the front passenger airbags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated," the agency warned.

BMW dealers will repair the sensor system in the passenger seat when the recall begins in late September. BMW will extend the warranty for airbags on the recalled vehicles "to 10 years from the first registration without any mileage limit," according to NHTSA.

The warranty extension covers the 2006 6-Series, 3-Series with a standard seat, 2004 to 2005 Z4, 2004 to 2006 7-Series, 2006 X5 and 2004 to 2006 5-Series with a comfort seat.

"Under the extended warranty program, the occupant detection mat in a vehicle that experiences this specific issue will be replaced at not charge to the customer," NHTSA advises on its Web site.

NHTSA began investigating airbags failures in the BMW earlier this year when the Office of Defect Investigation reported that "the passenger frontal airbag may malfunction and render the passenger airbag inoperative."

The models included in the initial investigation were the 2004 to 2006 BMW 5 and 7 series sedans, Z4 convertibles and X3 SUVs, as well as 2006 BMW 3 and 6 series cars and X5 SUVs.

NHTSA reported "729 non-duplicating owner reports and 23,739 non-duplicating warranty claims" prompted the investigation or engineering analysis.
