NEWS: BMW is recalling 176,000 vehicles from 2012-2014; Power Brake System
Yahoo News @ October 1, 2013

OCTOBER 2013 - German carmaker BMW is recalling 176,000 vehicles from the model years 2012 to 2014 over a problem with the power brake system.

The company says in rare cases an interruption in the oil supply to a part can mean the loss of power braking assist. The brakes will still work, but the driver would have to press harder on the pedal.

The recall covers 76,200 vehicles sold in the U.S.

Affected BMW models have four-cylinder, 2-liter gasoline engines and include 125i compacts; 320i and 328i sedans; 520i and 528i sedans; X1 28i, 20i and 16i SUVs; X3 20i and 28i SUVs; and Z4 28i, 20i and 18i sports cars.

The company says owners will be notified by mail if their car is among those that need to be brought in for repair. BMW says if the brake-assist power is lost, drivers should pull over and call roadside assistance

NHTSA Campaign ID number: 13V044000   @  www.Safercar.Gov

FEBRUARY 2013 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle. If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2013. NEWS: BMW is recalling certain 2011 1-Series ActiveE passenger vehicles
NHTSA Campaign ID number: 13V017000       @  www.Safercar.Gov

FEBRUARY 2013 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2011 1-Series ActiveE passenger vehicles manufactured August 17, 2011, through December, 19, 2011. Due to an insufficient sealing of the drivetrain housing assembly there may be a lack of grease lubrication on the gear shaft that transfers power from the electric motor to the transmission. Over time, the connection between the electric motor and the transmission may wear, possibly resulting in a sudden loss of vehicle propulsion. This could increase the risk of a vehicle crash. BMW will notify owners by telephone, and dealers will inspect the drivetrain connection and update the sealing system. Any worn electric motor gearing will be replaced. The recall is expected to begin in February 2013. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. 13V017000

NEWS:   BMW recalls 150,000 cars with potential fuel pump failure

YAHOO NEWS -- October 27,  2010 – BMW of North America announced a recall Tuesday of more than 150,000 vehicles because of potential problems with their fuel pumps.

BMW said the problem is specific to vehicles with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines with the High Pressure Injection direct fuel injection system. The high-pressure fuel pumps for these vehicles run the risk of failure, BMW said.

BMW said a recall of 130,000 vehicles extends to 335i models from 2007 to 2010, as well as the following models from 2008 to 2010: 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes. The recall also applies to Z4 Roadster sDrive35i models from 2009 to 2010.

About 40,000 of the 130,000 vehicles are expected to need a new high pressure fuel pump, the company said.

The company said that "symptoms include long-crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the 'service engine soon' light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a safe mode accompanied by a tone and illumination of the 'engine malfunction' light."

BMW also announced a separate recall of about 20,800 MY 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles. These vehicles will also need a new low-pressure fuel pump, the company said.

"In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes, although both the steering and brakes remain operational," the company said.

JUNE 2010 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2011 1-Series vehicles. In a crash of sufficient severity, deployment of the front pre-tensioner and load-limiter occurs. The insulation around the pretensioner could ignite. The manufacturer has not yet provided a remedy or an owner notification schedule for this campaign.   10V-254

JULY 2009 -- BMW is recalling 2,350 MY 2008 1-Series and 3- Series passenger cars. Incorrect crimp connectors may have been used on the side air bag and belt tensioner wiring. As a result sufficient contact between the crimp connectors and the corresponding plug may not occur which could lead to an increase in the electrical resistance of that connection. The side air bag and/or the safety belt tensioner may not deploy in a crash and an occupantmay not be properly protected, increasing the risk of injuries or death. BMW will notify owners and repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2009.  09V-257
