The German automaker said the recall covers 2008-2011 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 SAV, and X6 SAV models that have eight- or 12-cylinder turbocharged engines. The recall comes after BMW found at least 102 cases of pump failures worldwide — including two engine-compartment fires. BMW said it is unaware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the condition. The auxiliary pump helps cool the turbocharger during some driving conditions and in some cases can fail, causing the circuit board to overheat. That could lead to a fire. BMW said in most cases drivers will be alerted by a warning message on the instrumental cluster during driving. BMW first discovered the issue in June 2009 on test vehicles. In April 2010, a smoldered electrical cable of the water pump was found on a BMW-owned vehicle. The company set up a task force in May 2010 after two customer vehicles reported burned engine compartments. Dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump and will be notified next month. Owners will be notified starting next month as well. MORE RECALL INFO: AUGUST 2011 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2009 X5 xDrive35d vehicles equipped with a diesel engine and manufactured from October 1, 2008, through June 12, 2009. The fuel filter heater, which is used for warming up the diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low outside temperatures, could experience an elect rical overload condition and become permanently activated. The fuel filter heater could remain activated even when the ignition is off and lead to a dead battery. The unit could also overheat, possibly leading to a vehicle fire. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel filter heater free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2011. 11V-441 JUNE 2011 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2011 X3 passenger vehicles manufactured from April 27, 2011, through June 8, 2011. A control module in the electric power steering (EPS) unit may malfunction, resulting in a sudden loss of power steering assistance. Sudden loss of power steering assistance could increase the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during July 2011. 11V-341 OCTOBER 2010 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2008 X5 SAVs vehicles with 6-cylinder engines manufactured from November 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008. Due to a manufacturing process fault, the fuel pump was not produced to specifications. Under specific vehicle operating conditions, the fuel pump's commutator could experience an increase in wear. This wear could lead to fuel pump malfunction and engine stalling. Engine stalling could create a potential for a crash resulting in injury or death. The manufacturer has not yet provided a remedy or an owner notification schedule for this campaign. 10V-518 NEWS: BMW recalls 150,000 cars with potential fuel pump failure YAHOO NEWS -- October 27, 2010 – BMW of North America announced a recall Tuesday of more than 150,000 vehicles because of potential problems with their fuel pumps. BMW said the problem is specific to vehicles with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines with the High Pressure Injection direct fuel injection system. The high-pressure fuel pumps for these vehicles run the risk of failure, BMW said. BMW said a recall of 130,000 vehicles extends to 335i models from 2007 to 2010, as well as the following models from 2008 to 2010: 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes. The recall also applies to Z4 Roadster sDrive35i models from 2009 to 2010. About 40,000 of the 130,000 vehicles are expected to need a new high pressure fuel pump, the company said. The company said that "symptoms include long-crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the 'service engine soon' light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a safe mode accompanied by a tone and illumination of the 'engine malfunction' light." BMW also announced a separate recall of about 20,800 MY 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles. These vehicles will also need a new low-pressure fuel pump, the company said. "In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes, although both the steering and brakes remain operational," the company said. The vehicles are equipped with 20-inchwheels, but the label states that the vehicles were equipped with 19-inch wheels and the stated tirepressure is incorrect for the equipped wheels. Improper tire inflation can result in premature tire failure or reduced vehicle handling performance, either of which can increase the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners and provide correct labels free of charge. The owner will have the option to affix the label themselves or they may take their vehicle to a BMW dealer who will affix the label for them at no cost. The rear brake discs may not have been manufactured according to specifications. As a result, a reduction in braking performance at the affected rear wheel could occur. In an extreme case, the affected rear brake disc could break resulting in a loss of braking at that wheel increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners and will repair the vehicles by inspecting the rear brake discs and, if necessary, replace them free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during August 2009. 09V-255 NEWS: BMW Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Airbag Failures Extends airbag warranty for some models MORE RECALL INFORMATION: BMW 3-Series BMW 5-Series BMW X3 MAY 2008 -- BMW is recalling 55 MY 2008 X5 sports utility vehicles for problems with the rear axle stabilizer (anti-sway bar). These vehicles were equipped with a sports-suspension stabilizer rather than a standard suspension stabilizer on the rear axle. In certain driving conditions, such as fast lane changes at high speed, the vehicle could experience an 'over-steer' behavior affecting vehicle handling and control, which could increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the rear axle stabilizer. The recall is expected to begin during May 2008. The cap of the brake fluid reservoir has been designed in order to recognize a low fluid level of the hydraulic brake system by triggering a red warning lamp in the instrument cluster. A switch that is attached to this cap could malfunction at high temperatures. If this happened, the red warning lamp in the instrument cluster would not be activated. Failure of the hydraulic brake system may cause increased stopping distances which could result in a crash. Dealers will replace the cap of the brake fluid reservoir. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. 07V391 OCTOBER 2007 -- BMW is recalling 29,250 MY 2006-2007 550I, 650I coupe and convertible and MY 2007 X5 4.8I passenger vehicles equipped with V8 engines. In conditions of below freezing temperatures combined with low humidity, it is possible for electrostatic discharge to occur at the fuel rails. If this were to occur, the engine electronic control unit (ECU) could be affected resulting in engine stalling. If stalling were to occur, the driver may not be able to maintain vehicle speed or accelerate and the power steering could fail increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will attach two ground cables in the engine compartment. The recall is expected to begin during November 2007. 07V-479 |
