BMW Z4 Recall Information

NEWS: BMW is recalling certain 1-Series, 3-Series ans Z4 vehicles
NHTSA Campaign ID number: 13V044000   @  www.Safercar.Gov

FEBRUARY 2013 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; and 2007-2011 3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March 2009 through June 2011. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle. If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2013. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. 13V044000

NEWS:   BMW recalls 150,000 cars with potential fuel pump failure

YAHOO NEWS -- October 27,  2010 – BMW of North America announced a recall Tuesday of more than 150,000 vehicles because of potential problems with their fuel pumps.

BMW said the problem is specific to vehicles with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines with the High Pressure Injection direct fuel injection system. The high-pressure fuel pumps for these vehicles run the risk of failure, BMW said.

BMW said a recall of 130,000 vehicles extends to 335i models from 2007 to 2010, as well as the following models from 2008 to 2010: 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes. The recall also applies to Z4 Roadster sDrive35i models from 2009 to 2010.

About 40,000 of the 130,000 vehicles are expected to need a new high pressure fuel pump, the company said.

The company said that "symptoms include long-crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the 'service engine soon' light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a safe mode accompanied by a tone and illumination of the 'engine malfunction' light."

BMW also announced a separate recall of about 20,800 MY 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles. These vehicles will also need a new low-pressure fuel pump, the company said.

"In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes, although both the steering and brakes remain operational," the company said.

NEWS:   Feds investigating BMW Z4 for steering problems

USA TODAY -- July 3, 2010 -- The government is opening investigations into possible power steering problems in Mazda3 passenger cars and BMW Z4 sports cars.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened investigations of possible loss of power steering in more than 290,000 Mazda3 sedans from the 2007-2009 model years and nearly 50,000 BMW Z4 sports cars from the 2003-2005 model years.

NHTSA said it has 33 steering complaints for the Mazda3's and reports of three crashes tied to the problem. It has received 107 complaints for the Z4 and one crash report.

Depending on the findings, NHTSA probes may or may not lead to recalls.

AUGUST 2009 -- BMW is recalling certain model year 2009 Z4 30i and 35i vehicles manufactured between March 10 and March 19, 2009. A defective crimp connector in a belt tensioner wiring plug may lead to increased electrical resistance of that connection. Increased electrical resistance in that circuit could cause the safety belt tensioner to fail to deploy in a crash, possibly resulting in increased injury to the seat occupant. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a remedy or notification schedule. 09V-327

NEWS:    BMW Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Airbag Failures

Extends airbag warranty for some models

ConsumerAffairs.com -- August 13, 2008 -- BMW is recalling 200,000 cars and small SUVs because the front passenger-side airbag could fail.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned that in some of the recalled BMWs it is possible that "the front passenger airbags will not deploy even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur."

The recalled BMWs include the 2004 to 2005 5-Series standard and sport seat models, the 2004 to 2006 X3 and the 2006 3-Series with sport seats.

NHTSA reported on its Web site that the passenger-side airbags can deactivate because of wear associated with a passenger getting in and out of the vehicle.

"Depending on the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit, small cracks have developed in the (sensor) mat. If this occurs, the front passenger airbags, with the exception of the head protection system, will be deactivated," the agency warned.

BMW dealers will repair the sensor system in the passenger seat when the recall begins in late September. BMW will extend the warranty for airbags on the recalled vehicles "to 10 years from the first registration without any mileage limit," according to NHTSA.

The warranty extension covers the 2006 6-Series, 3-Series with a standard seat, 2004 to 2005 Z4, 2004 to 2006 7-Series, 2006 X5 and 2004 to 2006 5-Series with a comfort seat.

"Under the extended warranty program, the occupant detection mat in a vehicle that experiences this specific issue will be replaced at not charge to the customer," NHTSA advises on its Web site.

NHTSA began investigating airbags failures in the BMW earlier this year when the Office of Defect Investigation reported that "the passenger frontal airbag may malfunction and render the passenger airbag inoperative."

The models included in the initial investigation were the 2004 to 2006 BMW 5 and 7 series sedans, Z4 convertibles and X3 SUVs, as well as 2006 BMW 3 and 6 series cars and X5 SUVs.

NHTSA reported "729 non-duplicating owner reports and 23,739 non-duplicating warranty claims" prompted the investigation or engineering analysis.

BMW owners can contact the automaker at 1-800-525-7417 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
