MORE RECALL INFO: NEWS: Ford recalls 220,000 vehicles in two campaigns JANUARY 2015 -- Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday it is recalling more than 220,000 vehicles — most because a door could fly open in a crash because of a handle issue. The Dearborn automaker is recalling 205,000 2010-13 Ford Taurus, Lincoln MKS and Ford Police Interceptor sedans due to an issue with the spring that controls the interior door handles. Ford said the door could become unlatched in a side-impact crash, increasing the risk of injury. The recall covers 194,889 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, 9,948 in Canada and 108 in Mexico. Dealers will inspect all four interior door handle assemblies and repair or replace the handles as necessary. Ford is also recalling 16,100 2014 Ford Transit Connect vans for a potential issue with safety belt fasteners that may not have been tightened properly. Safety belt fasteners that do not meet installation specifications may loosen over time, which may cause them not to function as intended, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to either condition. Dealers will replace and properly tighten the safety belt fasteners. MORE RECALL INFO: NEWS: Ford is recalling certain 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles; TRANSMISSION AUG 2014 -- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning. If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by August 29, 2014. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. MORE RECALL INFO: NEWS: Ford issues 6 new recalls covering 101,000 vehicles JULY 2014 -- Ford Motor Co. said late Monday it is recalling 101,000 vehicles in six new recall campaigns, bringing the total recalls so far this year by the Dearborn automaker to nearly 3 million vehicles in the United States. The biggest recall covers 92,000 vehicles in North America, including 2013-2014 models of the Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Ford Police Interceptor, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT; 2012-2014 Ford Edge; and 2014 Lincoln MKX. All have potential issues with the right-side halfshaft. Because of faulty assembly, the vehicles may experience “loss of drive function,” Ford said. The Ford said the vehicles could roll away if the gearshift is placed in “park” without the emergency brake being activated. Ford said dealers will inspect the halfshaft and repair or replace as needed. MORE RECALL INFO: Ford is also recalling 2,100 2014 Ford Escape SUVs for a potential problem with the panorama roof glass that may have an improperly cured bond between the glass and the attaching bracket that could result in noise, water leak or separation of the panel from the vehicle. Dealers will replace the panel if they were built between Oct. 15 and Oct. 22, 2013, at the Louisville Assembly Plant. MORE RECALL INFO: Ford said no crashes or injuries have been reported in any of the new recall campaigns. The recalls are the latest sign that automakers are boosting recalls because of stricter scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford recalled 1.19 million vehicles in 16 recall campaigns in the United States in all of 2013. So far this year, Ford says it has issued 19 recalls covering 2.94 million vehicles. Automakers have recalled nearly 40 million vehicles in the United States this year, an all-time record that shatters the 30.8 million recalled in 2004. General Motors Co. leads the pack with 25.2 million callbacks, also an all-time record. Other recalls announced Monday by Ford: ■ 197 2014 Ford Fiestas are being called back in North America for a potential issue with the fuel tank. Some fuel tanks may be missing an adhesive layer. Without that adhesive, it may leak fuel and catch fire. MORE RECALL INFO: Two of the recalls involve Ford commercial vehicles: ■ Ford is recalling 5,264 2011-2014 Ford F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in North America because electrical junction blocks could short-circuit if driven in areas where salt is spread on roads. Drivers may experience smoke coming from the right front wheel well, a loss of electrical power — or potentially a fire, with or without the engine running. Dealers will replace the block. ■ Ford is recalling 635 2014 Ford F53 Motorhome Stripped Chassis and F59 Commercial Stripped Chassis vehicles in North America for a possible issue with the brake calipers. Some may have been incorrectly machined and could result in a leak between the piston and piston bore, which could result in longer brake pedal travel and increased stopping distances. Some of the recalls are very minor, but automakers are taking no chances running afoul of NHTSA:. ■ 368 2014 Ford Transit Connect vans are being called back because of a labeling issue with the brake fluid reservoir cap in Puerto Rico. The brake reservoir cap on the affected vehicles does not conform to brake system labeling requirement. The vehicles shipped to Puerto Rico had a European brake reservoir pictogram label, which does not contain the text required by U.S. law. MORE RECALL INFO: The recalls are the most recent by the Dearborn automaker. In May, it announced it was recalling nearly 1.4 million vehicles in four separate recall campaigns, including 1.1 million Ford Escapes, Mercury Mariners and Ford Explorers in North America for power steering problems. Three of the four recalls came under pressure from U.S. and Canadian auto safety regulators — another sign that government agencies are taking a harder line with automakers in the aftermath of the General Motors Co. recall crisis. Ford opted to recall the vehicles rather than fight regulators. NEWS: Ford is recalling certain 2010-2014 Taurus vehicles; LICENSE PLATE LAMP ASSEMBLY; RUST JUNE 2014 -- Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Taurus vehicles manufactured November 24, 2008, through February 28, 2014, originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. When used in areas that use road salt, the license plate lamp assembly may experience an electro-chemical reaction and corrosion as a result of water intrusion. This corrosion may result in a short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the license plate lamp assemblies, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on July 25, 2014. Ford's number for this recall is 14S08. Note: Under program 14R01, Ford will notify owners in non-corrosion states, and, at the customer's request, dealers will replace the license plate lamp assembly. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. In the affected vehicles, with sufficient door openings and closings, the child safety locks may change from an activated position to a deactivated position without notice. If the child lock is deactivated, the door could be unlocked and opened from the inside which could lead to personal injury to an unrestrained child. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will test the safety locks. If necessary, the locks will be replaced free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 5, 2013. Ford's recall number is 13S07. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. NEWS: Ford issues 3 recalls, including one for 465K vehicles MAY 2013 -- Ford Motor Co. issued three recalls for 2013 models Friday, including calling back 465,000 vehicles for fire risks after 600 complaints of fuel leaks. The new recalls are the latest in a series of quality issues facing the Dearborn automaker during the last year as it has issued repeated recalls for many of its most popular new vehicles. It also announced Friday small recalls of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ because insulation on the engine block heater cord could catch fire and of 2013 Ford Fusions that could have improperly assembled steering gears, which could cause loss of steering ability. The first recall, for potentially leaky fuel tanks, affects 465,000 vehicles — 390,000 of them in the U.S. — including 2013 Ford Explorer, Taurus, Flex, Fusion and Police Interceptor utilities and sedans, and Lincoln MKS, MKT and MKZ vehicles. Ford said it received 600 fuel leak complaints as of March 31.
“The condition could result in customers detecting a fuel odor, or in some cases, observe evidence of a fuel leak on the ground,” Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said in an email. “While a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire, there have been no reports of fires. We are not aware of any accidents or injuries attributed to this condition.” Ford is also recalling 500 of its new 2013 Lincoln MKZ midsize sedans — 100 in the U.S. and the rest in Canada — equipped with engine block heaters. The automaker says the insulation on the engine block heater electrical cord has the potential to crack in temperatures of minus-4 degrees or colder. A cracked cord could potentially expose wiring, increasing the risk of electrical shock and corrosion. The Dearborn automaker is also recalling 23 of its new 2013 Fusion midsize sedans — 20 in the U.S. — for steering gears that may have been built without an internal retaining clip. That flaw could result in impaired steering or loss of steering control. The recalls are another black eye for the launch of the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, which share the same platform and are built at the same assembly plant in Hermosillo, Mexico. The new Fusion, which debuted last fall, was recalled last year for problems stemming from its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. Engine leaks and related fire risks prompted the recalls. Engine overheating can lead to fluid leaks, which could come in contact with a hot exhaust, resulting in a fire. A software fix was supposed to fix the problem — and it did, for most owners. But follow-up tests revealed the need for additional repairs on some engines. At one point, Ford said about 1,400 Fusions and Escapes, including some on dealer lots, were not drivable because of a parts shortage. Most recently, the new MKZ, which was slated to launch in December but arrived as many four months late to some dealerships, had to be shipped from Ford’s Hermosillo plant to its Flat Rock Assembly Plant for additional quality inspections. Ford CEO said earlier this year the number of recalls for 2013 models wasn’t a problem, but instead a sign that the automaker was focused on quality. “We learned from every one of them,” he said. Last year Ford recalled more than 1.4 million vehicles. So far this year it has recalled more than 700,000. The latest recalls come days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was opening a preliminary investigation into 400,000 2011-2013 Ford F-150 trucks with 3.5L EcoBoost engines. There have been 95 complaints alleging unexpected sharp reductions in engine power during hard acceleration at highway speeds. NEWS: Ford is recalling certain model year 2012 Taurus, Lincoln MKS, and 2013 Ford Explorer MARCH 2013 -- Ford is recalling certain model year 2012 Taurus, Lincoln MKS, and model year 2013 Explorer vehicles manufactured July 19, 2011, through March 15, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the fuel tanks may have a marginally sealed seam in the side of the tank. As a result, the fuel tanks may not provide the expected strength in the event of an impact. The tanks may also leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel tanks and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 22, 2013. Ford's recall campaign number is 13S03. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. MORE RECALL INFO: NEWS: Ford to recall Taurus, Exploer and Lincoln MKS to fix fuel tanks MARCH 2013 -- Ford Motor Co said on Tuesday that it will recall about 3,500 Taurus, Explorer and Lincoln MKS vehicles around the world to repair fuel tanks equipped with an improperly molded seam. The tanks with these seams may leak after a severe crash, Ford said. As of February 28, the second-largest U.S. automaker received six reports of tanks with a fuel odor or leak due to the defect. The action covers the 2012 Ford Taurus and the 2012 Lincoln MKS sedans as well as the 2013 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle. More than 3,000 of the recalled Ford models are in the United States, Ford spokeswoman said. The models were built at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant. The Taurus and MKS models were built between July 2011 and January 2012, while the Explorer SUVs were made over a few days in March 2012, the company said. The automaker said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the issue MORE RECALL INFO: NEWS: NHTSA opening investigation into 360,000 Ford Taurus sedans; 2005-2006 MARCH 2012 -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Sunday said it opening a preliminary investigation into 360,000 2005-2006 Ford Taurus sedans over complaints of stuck throttles because of cruise control cable detachment. NHTSA said it is has received 14 complaints from Taurus owners that say the engine revved as high as 4,000 RPMs after shifting into park or neutral. Some complaints say owners had trouble stopping the vehicles - and one owner said the vehicle had traveled partially through a red light before it stopped. Some drivers had to shift into neutral or shut off the car to stop the vehicle. Ford didn't immediately respond to a request seeking comment. NHTSA didn't identify any crashes or injuries related to the issue in its statement. In a complaint filed Feb. 15, an owner from Hickory, N.C., said "while coasting uphill and approaching my left turn the (2006 Taurus) began to accelerate. I made the left turn while applying a good amount of force to the brake pedal for fear that I would hit mail boxes and homes." The owner of a 2005 Taurus told NHTSA in November that when stopped at a light the car started to rev "and could not hold on brakes enough to stop moving. Went through red light , around two cars as speed reached about 70 miles per hour. Both feet on brakes. Could smell them burning," the owner wrote. "Please someone make Ford wake up about this problem before someone is killed. I wouldn't feel right trading it in, for fear of someone else getting killed." In both complaints, the owners said the problem was a disconnected cruise control cable. MORE RECALL INFO: NEWS: Ford recalls some 235,000 pickups, vans, SUVs Vehicles from 2006 model year may have problems with windshield wipers WASHINGTON (AP) - November 17, 2005. Ford Motor Co. is recalling about 235,000 pickups, vans and sport utility vehicles from the 2006 model year because of potential problems with the windshield wiper motor. The models include the E-150, E-250, E-350 and E-450 vans, the Escape, Expedition and Explorer SUVs, F-150 and Ranger pickups and Taurus sedan. It also includes the Lincoln Navigator SUV and Lincoln Mark LT pickup and Mercury Mountaineer and Mariner SUV. It is Ford’s second large recall in two days. On Wednesday, the automaker said it was recalling 220,000 vehicles from the 2005 model year amid concerns a battery cable rubbing against the frame could cause fires and worry that a fuel tank strap could separate after tens of thousands of miles. MORE... NEWS Government investigating Ford models Associated Press - The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it opened a preliminary investigation into the 2000-2001 models of the Taurus and Sable sedans after receiving 131 complaints about broken coil springs. The inquiry involves about 467,000 vehicles. The Taurus was among the best-selling passenger cars in the United States during the two model years. Most of the complaints came from northern states where vehicles are often subject to salt corrosion during the winter. About half of the owners who filed complaints said there were punctures in the rear tires because of the broken coil springs.
