JUNE 2014 -- This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position could cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two 13mm key rings and key insert into the vehicle's ignition keys, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. JUNE 2014 -- General Motors Co. said Monday it is recalling nearly 3.4 million cars for ignition switch problems worldwide after reports of eight crashes and six injuries. It is one of six new recall campaigns totaling 3.6 million vehicles that was announced by the automaker.
The recall — which is similar to GM’s delayed recall of 2.6 million older Cobalt, Ion and other cars linked to 13 deaths and 54 crashes due to faulty ignition switches — comes as the automaker’s woes continue to mount. On Friday, GM recalled more than 510,000 current-generation Chevrolet Camaros for ignition switch problems linked to three crashes in which air bags failed to deploy.
In the ignition switch recall announced Monday, GM said it will rework or replace the ignition keys on some 2000-14 cars in the U.S. because the ignition switch may inadvertently move out of the “run” position if the key is carrying extra weight and experiences some jarring event. That causes the engine to stall, disabling power steering, power brakes and air bags.

GM spokesman said now-fired engineer — who received much of the blame for the delayed recall in GM’s investigation, was the “design-release engineer” for the switches involved in the new recall announced Monday. Now-fired engineer signed off on the original Cobalt ignition switch in 2002 that didn’t meet GM’s specifications and approved an upgrade in the switch in 2005 and didn’t change the part number, the report found.
GM spokesman said the switches in the latest recall did meet GM’s specifications. He noted that unlike the Cobalt and Ion recall, the automaker isn't replacing the ignition switches, only the keys. GM will add an insert to the ignition keys of the recalled vehicles to close the slot and leave a smaller hole through which a key ring could be attached. In vehicles where the key cover has been worn, new keys with holes instead of slots will be provided free of charge.
Fixes are expected to begin in the next few weeks. Until then, owners of recalled cars are urged to remove additional weight from key chains and drive with only the ignition key.
GM said just one of the models included in the U.S. recall for ignition switch problems — which totals 3.16 million — is still in production: the previous-generation Chevrolet Impala, which is sold to rental fleets as the Impala Limited. The total number being recalled in North America — U.S., Canada, Mexico and exports — is 3.36 million.
In addition to the ignition key recall, GM also announced U.S. recalls for 165,770 vehicles in these five actions:
■ 68,887 2013-14 Cadillac ATS and 21,863 2014 Cadillac CTS sedans. In some vehicles with automatic transmissions, the shift cable may not be fully secured to the shifter bracket or transmission bracket. If the shift cable comes out of the brackets, the driver may not be able to shift in or out of gear. GM is unaware of crashes or injuries.
■ 57,192 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 HD and 2015 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 GMC Sierra HD pickups to inspect for proper attachment of power steering hose clamps to the power steering pump. If hose comes loose, loss of power steering and power brakes would result. GM knows of no crashes or injuries.
■ 16,932 2011 Cadillac CTS sedans with all-wheel drive. On some vehicles, a gasket leak where the constant velocity joint meets the rear propeller shaft may cause the rear propeller shaft to separate or become loose, making contact with the vehicle floor above and causing the rollover sensor to inflate roof-rail air bags. GM is aware of 15 unintended deployments, but injury data is unclear.
■ 712 2014 Chevrolet Corvettes with optional Competition Sport Seats, because an unbelted child and door trim may block the passenger seat side air bag vent. Dealers will replace the bag. GM is unaware of any injuries related to this condition, but advises customers to not allow small children in the front seat until it’s serviced.
■ 184 2014-15 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups with vinyl floors and accessory all-weather floor mats purchased new with the vehicle. The mats can slip under the driver’s feet because the vinyl floors have no attachments to secure them in place. Customers are advised to take the floor mats to their dealer for a full refund. GM is unaware of any crashes or injuries.
GM has issued 44 recalls this year calling back 20 million vehicles worldwide, including 17.7 million in the United States — by far an all-time record. The tally includes some vehicles that have been called back more than once.
NEWS: GM recalls cars due to power steering fluid leak
YAHOO NEWS -- November 11, 2010 – General Motors Co will recall 13,780 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne luxury sedans because of possible power steering fluid leaks that could cause a loss of steering or an engine fire.
GM said in a notice to U.S. safety regulators that it investigated reports in late August of two fires in vehicles. GM determined that a power steering fluid line could leak because of wear.
The problem, which affects cars for model years 2010 and 2011, is that the starter or alternator cable could rub against the power steering return line and wear it thin, according to a notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website dated November 10.
A weakened power steering return line could lead to a loss of power steering. Additionally, the leak onto hot engine parts could prompt a fire in the engine compartment.
On August 24, the Hamtramck plant in Michigan, where the cars are made, halted shipments on completed vehicles and examined the remaining cars to ensure that the cables did not rub together.

NOVEMBER 2010 -- General Motors is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 DTS and Buick Lucerne vehicles equipped with V8 engines. The starter or alternator cable is in contact with the power steering return line. If either the starter or alternator cable is contacting the power steering return line, the cable could wear through the line, causing a power steering fluid leak. A power steering leak could result in a loss of power steering, increasing the risk of a crash, and/or the leak onto hot engine parts could cause an engine compartment fire. JUNE 2010 -- GM is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Buick, Lucerne; Cadillac DTS; Hummer H2; Model Year 2008-2009 Buick Enclave; Cadillac CTS; Model Year 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Xl; Saturn Outlook; and Model Year 2009 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles equipped with a heated washer fluid system (HWFS). A recall was implemented in 2008 to add a fuse to the control circuit harness to address the potential consequences of a printed circuit board (PCB) electrical short. However, there have been new reports of thermal incidents on HWFS modules after this improvement was installed. These incidents resulted from a new failure mode attributed to the device's thermal protection feature. The significance varies from minor distortion to considerable melting of the plastic around the HWFS fluid chamber. It is possible for the heated washer module to ignite and a fire may occur. Dealers will permanently disable and remove the heated washer fluid module. An updated page for the owner manual will be provided and inserted in the owner manual to document that the feature has been permanently disabled and removed from the vehicle. NEWS: GM recalling 1.5M vehicles over fire concerns
YAHOO NEWS – June 8, 2010 – General Motors Co. said Tuesday it was recalling about 1.5 million vehicles worldwide to address a problem with a heated windshield wiper fluid system that could lead to a fire, its second recall over the issue in two years.
The recall affects several pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, crossovers and passenger car models from the 2006 to 2009 model years. GM conducted a similar recall in 2008 but came across new reports of fires in vehicles that had been fixed.
GM said it would disable the heated washer fluid system module that could lead to fires. The Detroit automaker will pay owners and those leasing vehicles $100 each since the feature is being disabled.
GM said it was aware of five fires but there had been no injuries or crashes reported. Nearly 1.4 million vehicles are in the U.S. and more than 100,000 vehicles are in Canada, Mexico and other international markets.
"While our analysis shows the number of incidents is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the road, we want our customers to have complete peace of mind," said Jeff Boyer, GM's executive director of safety.
The recall covers the 2006-2009 model year Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, and Hummer H2; 2008-2009 Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS; 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; 2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; 2007-2009 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL; 2007-2009 Saturn Outlook; and 2009 Chevrolet Traverse.
The auto company said customers will begin to receive recall letters later this month but can contact their dealer to make an appointment to have the heated washer system removed. Dealers will remove the heated washer fluid module and reroute washer fluid hoses.
GM said the technology was available from only one supplier, Microheat Inc., of Farmington Hills, Mich., which went out of business, preventing GM from working with another supplier on an improved design.
GM recalled more than 900,000 vehicles because of the heated washer fluid system in August 2008 because a short circuit on the circuit board could overheat the ground wire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had opened an investigation in February 2008 into 2007 Yukon and Tahoe vehicles over potential engine compartment fires.
The government closed its investigation after the 2008 recall but GM later came across fires in vehicles that had been fixed under the previous recall, prompting the latest safety action.

DECEMBER 2009 - GM is recalling model year 2010 Cadillac DTS vehicles for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims". The tire and loading information label, which lists the proper tire and vehicle loading information, was not installed on the vehicle. In addition, there are two labels affixed to affected vehicles that incorrectly describe them as an incomplete vehicle. One label is the vehicle certification label, which certifies that the vehicle conforms to all applicable U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety, bumper, and theft prevention standards. The second label is the service parts identification label, which lists various components used in the manufacturing of the vehicle. Driving the vehicle with tires that are not properly inflated could result in tire overloading, premature or irregular wear, and/or poor handling increasing the risk of a crash. GM will mail the three correct labels to owners along with installation instructions. Owners may also take the vehicle and the labels to a dealer for installation. NEWS: GM recalls 944,000 vehicles for fire hazard
Recall involves vehicles that are equipped with windshield washer fluid heaters.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- August 28, 2008 -- General Motors is recalling 944,000 vehicles, 850,000 of them in the United States, because of the potential for a fire in the vehicles' heated windshield washer fluid system.
A short circuit in the circuit board that controls the system could cause a grounding wire to overheat. That could lead to smoke and the malfunctioning of other electrical components, GM (GM, Fortune 500) said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In rare cases, it could cause a fire, GM said.
GM is aware of three fires caused by this problem, two of which were in the company's own test fleet vehicles, GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said. The company is not aware of any injuries caused by the problem.
The vehicles must be turned on for the short circuit to occur, Wilkinson said, but he could not say whether the washer fluid heating system needed to be in use.
The models listed below, if they're equipped with a heated windshield washer fluid system, are subject to the recall:
- Model year 2006-08 Buick Lucerne sedans and model year 2008 Buick Enclave SUVs.
- Model year 2006-08 Cadillac DTS sedans and model year 2007-08 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT SUVs.
- Model year 2007-08 Chevrolet Avalanche and Silverado trucks and Suburban and Tahoe SUVs.
- Model year 2007-08 GMC Acadia, Yukon, and Yukon XL SUVs and Sierra trucks.
- 2008 Saturn Outlook SUVs.
The fluid heating system is a popular option on many of GM's large cars and SUVs, said Wilkinson.
On cold days, the system heats windshield washer fluid before spraying it onto the windshield, where it can melt ice and frost on the windshield.
To fix the problem, dealers will install a fuse that will shut off the system in the event of a short circuit. GM has not yet provided NHTSA with a schedule detailing when owners of affected vehicles will be notified.
