SEPTEMBER 2016 -- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2015-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, 3500 HD, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles and 2014-2017 Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500, Trax, Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle, GMC Sierra 1500, Buick Encore, and 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV and SS vehicles. In the affected vehicles, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash. A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger. GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. GM's number for this recall is 16007. NEWS: GM recalling 524,000 vehicles in two new recalls
Detroit News  @ October 3, 2014

OCT 2014 -- General Motors Co. said Friday it is recalling 524,000 vehicles in two new recall campaigns — including 290,000 U.S. SUVs for loose nuts that have been linked to three crashes and two injuries.

On Monday, GM said it was recalling 120,000 2010-15 Cadillac SRX SUVs in China and Canada for suspension issues, but wouldn’t say how many vehicles were affected in the United States. GM said Friday the recall include 290,107 2010-15 Cadillac SRX and 2011-12 Saab 9-4X SUVs in the United States to make sure rear toe link adjuster bolts are properly tightened.

GM said loose notes could result in a loose joint and worn threads that could cause the toe adjuster link to separate. Dealers will inspect for the condition and, if necessary, will remove them and install a new link assembly. Unsold vehicles are being checked for proper torquing before being sold. GM is aware of three crashes and two injuries as result of this condition.

GM also said it is recalling nearly 90,000 2013-15 Chevrolet Spark models in the U.S. because rust can cause the secondary hood latch striker to stick in the open position. If the primary latch is not closed, the hood could open unexpectedly. These vehicles, imported from South Korea, were manufactured with a secondary hood latch that may prematurely rust at the latch pivot, causing the striker to get stuck out of position and preventing the striker from properly engaging the hood latch.

The new recalls means GM has issued at least 71 separate recalls in 2014. It means GM North America has called back 26.5 million vehicles in the United States and at least 29.9 million worldwide.

About 13,000 of these unsold vehicles are subject to a stop sale at U.S. dealerships and will not be delivered until repairs are made. Customers will be notified by letter about the recall and dealers will replace the hood striker with an improved part when parts are available .

GM told NHTSA in March it learned of three incidents in the United Kingdom of the hoods opening without warning. During its investigation, GM learned that in November 2013 the part failed a component level corrosion test. By February, GM had determined that the anti-rust coating was “deficient and did not meet GM’s requirements.” A change to a better coating was implemented on July 31. GM said it had 10 warranty reports of the problem in the United States.

GM is not aware of any crashes or injuries. as a result of this condition.

The Justice Department is investigating GM’s handling of a delayed ignition switch recall of 2.6 million older Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other cars linked to at least 23 deaths. The Securities and Exchange Commission, 45 state attorneys general and Canadian officials are also investigating.

GM paid a record-setting $35 million fine to NHTSA in May for delaying its ignition recall and agreed to up to three years of intense monitoring by NHTSA.

Automakers have recalled nearly 50 million vehicles this year, shattering the prior all-time record of 30.8 million vehicles recalled in 2004

Potential Number of Units Affected: 1,919

JULY 2014 -- General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Spark vehicles manufactured from May 7, 2014, to May 26, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the left and right lower control arm attaching bolts in the front suspension may not be tightened to specification. If the lower control arm bolts are not tightened properly, the lower control arm may separate from the steering knuckle while driving, causing a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners are instructed NOT to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Owners should call a Chevrolet dealer immediately to arrange for their vehicle to be transported free of charge for servicing. GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left and right lower control arm attaching bolts to make sure that they are tightened to the proper specification, free of charge. The recall began on August 1, 2014. Note: Owners are advised not to drive the vehicle until the repairs have been completed. NEWS: GM calls back 822,000 vehicles in 6 new campaigns
Detroit News  @ July 24, 2014

JULY 2014 -- General Motors Co. said Wednesday it is recalling 822,685 vehicles worldwide — including 717,950 vehicles in the United States — in six new recall campaigns.

In the latest of a long string of callbacks, most are for minor problems. None are related to ignition switch defects that have plagued the automaker.

The recalls mean GM North America has issued a record 60 recall campaigns this year affecting 28.77 million vehicles worldwide and 25.48 million in the United States. GM revised downward its June 30 recall of Malibus, Impalas and other vehicles for ignition switch problems by 1.02 million vehicles to 6.6 million worldwide.

The biggest recall announced Wednesday covers 475,000 newer cars and trucks worldwide (414,333 in the U.S.) with power height-adjustable driver or front passenger seats. A bolt that secures the seat could fall out, letting the seat move up and down. Affected models include the 2011-12 Chevrolet Camaro; 2010-12 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain; 2011-12 Buick Regal and LaCrosse; and 2010-12 Cadillac SRX. GM is aware of one crash and three injuries linked to the defect. Dealers will replace the bolt.

MORE RECALL INFO:

“These recalls signify how we’ve enhanced our approach to safety,” said Jeff Boyer, GM’s vice president of Global Vehicle Safety. “We are bringing greater rigor and discipline to our analysis and decision-making. If we identify an issue — large or small — that might affect the safety of our customers, we will act decisively.”

GM had decided on four of the recalls last Tuesday, and GM CEO Mary Barra disclosed the higher total before a Senate committee.

Eric Ibara, director of residual values for Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com, said GM’s latest recalls “involve models that are currently being sold by the various GM brands, unlike earlier recalls on discontinued models. Going forward, attention will be focused on whether sales and values are impacted on these models.”

More than half of GM’s 29 million vehicles recalled this year are ignition-switch related, including 2.6 million Cobalts, Ions and other cars linked to at least 13 deaths. GM has recalled nearly all nameplates of 2014 models except the Volt and some versions of models like the Spark EV.

Other recalls announced Wednesday include:

■ 124,008 -- 2014 Chevrolet Caprice; 2014 Chevrolet SS; 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado LD and HD; 2013-14 Cadillac ATS; 2014 Cadillac CTS, 2014 Cadillac ELR; 2013-14 Buick Encore; and 2014-15 GMC Sierra LD and HD vehicles. Some may have an incomplete weld on the seat-hook bracket assembly. If the weld is incomplete, dealers will replace the lower seat track. Less than 1 percent of welds are expected to require fixes. GM is unaware of crashes or injuries.

MORE RECALL INFO:

■ 120,426 -- 2011-13 Buick Regals and 2013 Chevrolet Malibus that use two bulbs in each front turn signal. The driver gets a rapidly flashing turn signal arrow in the instrument cluster if both bulbs in one turn signal are burned out; but if only one bulb on either side burns out, there would be no signal to the driver. Dealers will reprogram the body control module. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or complaints.

MORE RECALL INFO:

■ 57,242 -- 2014 Chevrolet Impalas equipped with belt-drive electric power steering. Owners may experience reduced or no power-steering assist at start-up or while driving due to a poor electrical ground connection. If power steering is lost, a warning message is displayed on the driver information center and a chime sounds. The cars will revert to manual steering mode, requiring greater to steer, particularly at low speed. Dealers will check the ground and update the power steering control module’s software. GM is aware of one crash but no injuries.

MORE RECALL INFO:

■ 1,919 -- 2014-15 Chevrolet Sparks imported from Korea assembled with lower control arm bolts that were not fastened to specification. The condition could result in separation of the lower control arm from the steering knuckle, resulting in loss of steering control. Dealers will make sure the bolts are properly tightened. GM knows of no crashes or injuries.

MORE RECALL INFO:

■ 22 -- 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon Denali vehicles in the U.S. Roof carriers may have been attached with the wrong retaining nuts, resulting in holes or tears in the roof rail air bags if they deploy. Eight of these vehicles are in dealer stock and will be repaired before being sold.

NEWS: GM recalling 105,000 vehicles in four campaigns
Detroit News  @ June 6, 2014

JUNE 2014 -- General Motors Co. said Friday it is issuing four new recall campaigns covering nearly 150,000 vehicles in the United States — including three new recalls for air bag problems.

GM is issuing two recalls of each less than 100 vehicles. GM is recalling 61 2013-2014 Chevrolet Spark and 2013 model year Buick Encores manufactured in Changwon, Korea from Dec. 30, 2012 through May 8, 2013 because the vehicles may have a condition in which the front passenger airbag end cap could separate from the airbag inflator. In a crash, this may prevent the passenger airbag from deploying properly.

The largest recall involves 69,500 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LD, 2014 GMC Sierra LD and 2015 Silverado HD, Tahoe and Suburban and 2015 GMC Sierra HD and Yukon and Yukon XL models worldwide, 57,512 in the U.S. because the “base radio may not work, preventing audible warnings if the key is in the ignition when the driver’s door is opened. Nor would there be an audible chime if a front seat belt is not buckled. If they had this condition, the trucks would be out of compliance with motor vehicle safety standards covering theft protection, rollaway protection and occupant crash protection. Dealers will reprogram the radio control module free of charge.”

The Detroit automaker is also recalling 36,012 worldwide, 31,520 in the U.S., 2012 Buick Verano and Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze and Sonic compact cars for a defect in which the shorting bar inside the dual stage driver’s air bag may occasionally contact the air bag terminals. If contact occurs, the air bag warning light will turn on. GM said if the car and terminals are contacting each other in a crash, the air bag will not deploy. Dealers will replace the steering wheel air bag coil, which will eliminate contact any between the shorting bar and the air bag terminals. GM is aware of one crash with an injury where the relevant diagnostic trouble code was found at the time the vehicle was repaired. GM said it is aware of other crashes where air bags did not deploy but it is not known if they were related to this condition. This is the second time since 2012 that GM has expanded the recall population. Its previous recall for this condition involved 7,000 of these vehicles.

GM is also recalling 33 2014 Chevrolet Corvettes in the U.S. because an internal short-circuit in the sensing and diagnostic module could disable frontal air bags, safety belt pretensioners and the Automatic Occupancy Sensing module. GM dealers will replace the module on the affected vehicles. GM is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to either of the small recalls.
