Saturn Ion Recall Information NEWS: GM expands ignition switch recall to 1.4 million vehicles FEBRUARY 2013 -- General Motors Co. said Tuesday it is more than doubling the size of its recall for older cars with faulty ignition switches that can cause air bags not to deploy in crashes. Thirteen deaths now have been reported in cars in which front air bags failed to deploy, up from the six fatalities GM reported Feb. 13. The automaker on Tuesday also admitted it hadn’t properly reviewed the issue. The recall now covers 1.37 million vehicles in the U.S. and a total of 1.62 million including vehicles in Canada, Mexico and other exports from North America. Earlier this month, GM said it would recall about 619,000 vehicles in the U.S. In addition to the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5 recalled on Feb. 13, GM said it will recall another 748,000 cars in the U.S., including 2003-2007 Saturn Ions, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHRs and 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky models. GM said it recalling 40,859 2007-09 model vehicles that have a plastic piece on the fuel pump module that may crack, which could cause a fuel leak. The vehicles recalled are:
GM said owners of recalled cars may notice a fuel odor while the vehicle is being driven or after it is parked. If the crack becomes large enough and impedes the flow of fuel to the engine, vehicle performance could be affected and a warning light may illuminate on the instrument cluster. Fuel also may drip onto the ground and, if an ignition source were present, a fire could occur.,,,,In states that are not part of the recall, GM will offer free repairs of the condition for up to 10 years from the date of production or 120,000 miles for the 2006-09 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5; 2006-07 Saturn Ion; and 2007-09 model year Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, which could cause a fuel leak. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. The plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack. If either of these ports develops a crack, fuel will leak from the area. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Dealers will replace the fuel pump module free of charge. A special coverage will be implemented in the same time frame for model year 2006 vehicles registered in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas and model year 2007 vehicles registered in: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, north Carolina, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee.
