MARCH 2014 -- Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, and Sentra, model year 2013 NV200 (aka Taxi) and Infiniti JX35 and model year 2014 Infiniti Q50 and QX60 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult. If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger. Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in mid-April 2014. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Report Receipt Date: APR 12, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V136000
Component(s): AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected: 265,362

APRIL 2013 -- Nissan is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Maxima, Pathfinder, and Infiniti I35; model year 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4; and model year 2003 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and possibly certain Sentra vehicles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants. Owners of all vehicles on which a defective air bag may have been installed either as original equipment, or as a replacement, will be notified. Dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a notification schedule. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

NEWS:   Nissan is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Sentra vehicles; Electrical System; Battery Cables

DECEMBER 2011 -- Nissan is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Sentra vehicles equipped with MR20 engines, manufactured from May 11, 2010, to May 22, 2010, and July 8, 2010, to October 25, 2010. The zinc coating applied to the terminal stud bolt was thicker than specification. This can result in a voltage drop that may cause difficulty staring the vehicle and could cause damage to the engine control module (ecm). This issue can cause the engine to stall while the vehicle is in motion and it may not be possible to restart the engine after it stopped, increasing the risk of a crash. Nissan will notify owners and dealers will replace the positive battery terminal and cover, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before January 23, 2012 . 11V-579

NOVEMBER 2010 -- Nissan is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Sentra vehicles, manufactured from May 22, 2010, through July 8, 2010. Due to a machining irregularity, the bolt/washer surface on the positive battery terminal cable end may allow for a gap to occur in the contact area of the terminal. This can result in a voltage drop that may cause difficulty starting the vehicle and could cause damage to the engine control module. This issue can cause the engine to stop running while the vehicle is in motion at low speed with a difficult or no start increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the positive battery terminal cable end with a new one free of charge. The safety recall began on November 29, 2010.   10V-555

NEWS:  Nissan recalls more than half a million vehicles in Americas

YAHOO NEWS -- November 11,  2010 –  Nissan recalled over half a million vehicles in the Americas and Africa on Thursday over fears that a fault could cause the steering column to crack.

The Japanese carmaker said it would recall 303,000 Frontier and 283,000 Xterra SUVs over safety concerns.

"Nissan recently discovered that in certain rare instances, the lower steering column joint on the affected Frontier and Xterra vehicles can develop corrosion that limits the movement of the joint," the firm said in a statement.

"If the vehicle continues to be driven in this condition it may, in an extreme case, lead to cracking of the steering shaft."

"We regret any inconveniences that our customers may experience as we address these issues," said Kevin Martin of Nissan North America.

The affected vehicles were built at plants in Tennessee and Brazil between 2001 and 2008.

The company also recalled "18,500 Sentra vehicles in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil and a undisclosed number of African countries for problems with the battery cable terminal.

The fault could result in difficulty starting the vehicle, "and in rare cases, a possibility of stalling at low speed," the firm said.

Owners are advised to take their vehicles to a service center in early December to have new parts installed.

MORE RECALL INFO:

SEPTEMBER 2010 -- Nissan is recalling certain vehicles that were equipped with a Garmin NUVI model 750 navigation system. The batteries contained in the affected GPS units can overheat. Overheated batteries could result in a fire. Nissan will notify owners and the repairs will be performed by Garmin technicians by replacing the battery and inserting a spacer on top of the battery free of charge. The safety recall began on September 16, 2010.    10V-401

NOVEMBER 2009 -- Nissan is recalling certain model year 2009 Sentra passenger vehicles equipped with Bosch master cylinders. Brake fluid may leak from the master cylinder. If the amount of brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir decreases to below the minimum level, the brake system warning indicator will illuminate as designed and the brakes will not function properly. If the warning lamp is continuously ignored, one of the brake circuits on the vehicle may fail increasing stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect and replace the master cylinder brake booster assembly free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during December 2009.    09V-431

JULY 2008 --  Nissan is recalling 169,202 MY 2007-2008 Sentra passenger vehicles equipped with Robert Bosch master cylinders. These cylinders were manufactured in Mexico. Due to the machining irregularity by the supplier, the internal seal groove in the body of some brake master cylinders may allow for a gap in the groove contact area of the seal. This may result in brake fluid slowly leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster assembly, causing the brake warning light to illuminate. If the warning lamp is continuously ignored, one of the brake circuits on the vehicle may not operate as designed increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will inspect the master cylinder/brake booster assembly and if brake fluid leakage is detected, the master cylinder will be replaced with a new one. The recall is expected to begin during August 2008.  08V311

NOVEMBER 2007 --  Nissan is recalling 653,910 MY 2002 and 2005-2006 Altima and Sentra vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines. The crankshaft position sensor can overheat causing a brief interruption in the signal output from the sensor. If the interruption in the signal from the sensor is so brief that the electronic control module (ECM) logic does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without warning while the vehicle is driven at a low speed increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will reprogram the ECM. Certain MY 2006 Altimas which have been previously remedied under recall campaign 06V223 (Nissan R0606) are not included in this recall since the reprogramming for that recall also included this reprogramming. The recall is expected to begin during December 2007. This recall was the subject of a Recall Query, RQ06-001, conducted by the Office of Defects Investigation. 07V527

NEWS:   Nissan Recalls 2007-2008 Sentras

ConsumerAffairs.com -- July 22, 2008 --  Nissan is recalling 169,202 of the 2007 and 2008 model year Sentra because the brake master cylinder might leak fluid, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

"The internal seal groove in the body of some brake master cylinders may allow for a gap in the in the groove contact areas of the seal. This may result in brake fluid slowly leading from the master cylinder into the brake booster assembly, causing the brake warning light to illuminate," NHTSA advised.

NHTSA warned that if consumers ignore the lamp, "one of the brake circuits on the vehicle may not operate as designed increasing the risk of a crash.

Nissan dealers will inspect the braking system on the Sentra when the recall begins July 23.

If brake fluid is found to be leaking, Nissan will replace the master cylinder free of charge.

NEWS:    Nissan Recall Expanded to 654,000 Sentras and Altimas

Consumer Affairs -- Nov 21, 2007 -- Nissan Motor Co. is expanding a U.S. recall of Sentra and Altima sedans to repair a defective crankshaft sensor in 2002 and 2005 to 2006 models. The faulty sensor could cause the engine to shut off.

Nissan reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the recall covers about 653,910 vehicles with 2.5-liter engines.

The sensor's location may expose it to temperature changes that would interrupt signals the sensor sends to the engine control module, according to Nissan. Without those signals, the control module may shut off the engine in low-speed driving, Nissan said.
