2017-2018 Honda CR-V Engine Stalling Problems – Oil Dilution

Consumers complain of stalled engines and other problems

April 2019 – Consumer Reports — Many Honda CR-V owners were alarmed to learn that Honda recalled 380,000 CR-Vs and Civics in China in February after similar troubles were reported there. And they were frustrated that Honda wasn’t taking similar steps in this country.

Now, after owner complaints dating back to early 2017 and after repeated questions from Consumer Reports, Honda said in a statement that it is working on a fix. But the automaker didn’t say exactly how it would repair the SUVs, how many cars in the U.S. might be affected, whether it would cover all CR-V owners or only those who have experienced problems, or why it took the company so long to acknowledge the situation and identify a fix for American consumers.

The Honda statement also said that it doesn’t consider the problem a safety threat—a conclusion Consumer Reports auto safety experts question. “There are many ways stalling can be a safety issue, so if these cars are stalling, they need to be recalled,” says vice president for advocacy at Consumer Reports and former acting director of NHTSA. …. SUMMARY: I PURCHASE A 2017 HONDA CRV-EX WITH THE 1.5 LITER TURBO ENGINE. DURING THE PAST 6 MONTHS I’VE BEEN HAVING THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE – THE OIL SMELL OF GAS, PASSENGER COMPARTMENT SMELL LIKE GAS, RISING OIL LEVELS, STALLING AND LOSS OF POWER. I UNDERSTAND THAT HONDA MOTOR COMPANY , LTD HAS RECALLED 350,000 HONDA CRV’S IN CHINA BECAUSE OF THE SAME PROBLEM. THE COMPANY IS CALLING BACK THOSE CARS TO RESOLVE A PROBLEM CAUSED BY AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF UN-COMBUSTED PETROL COLLECTING IN THE ENGINE’S LUBRICANT OIL PAN. HONDA DEALERSHIPS IN CANADA WITH OIL DILUTION PROBLEMS HAVE ALREADY STARTED REPAIRS OF THEIR 2017 & 2018 HONDA CR-VS AFTER IT WAS CONTACTED BY CANADIAN MOTOR VEHICLE ARBITRATION PLAN (CAMVAP). I WOULD LIKE HONDA TO BUY BACK MY VEHICLE UNLESS I RECEIVED THE SAME REPAIRS AS THE CANADIAN HONDA OWNERS, WHICH ARE THE FOLLOWING: 1.) PERFORMED N60 CAMPAIGN (OIL DILUTION) 2.) REPLACED CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT 3.) REPLACED DRAIN PLUG WASHER 4.) REPLACED OIL 5.) UPDATED PGM-FI AND TCM SOFTWARE. 6.) WARRANTY EXTENSIONS ON ALL ENGINE COMPONENTS FOR UP TO SIX YEARS FROM ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE, WITH NO MILEAGE LIMIT. GIVEN THAT THE PROBLEM IS WELL DOCUMENTED, HONDA HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE IN AN OPEN AND TRANSPARENT MANNER. HONDA HAD KNOWLEDGE OF THE TURBO ENGINE DEFECTS THAT CAUSE FUEL TO ENTER THE ENGINE AND DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. I SEEK A PERMANENT FIX TO THE PROBLEM, NOT JUST A FLUSHING OUT OF THE VEHICLE’S OIL RESERVOIR AS THE DEALERSHIP HAS ALREADY PERFORMED TO NO EFFECT. IF HONDA CANNOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM, I SEEK A FULL REFUND OF MY VEHICLE.

SUMMARY: THE ENGINE OIL IS BEING DILUTED WITH GASOLINE DUE TO A FAULTY ENGINE DESIGN BY HONDA. WE FIRST NOTICED A STRONG GAS ODOR IN THE CABIN IN OCTOBER 2018. WE BOUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER IN NOV 2018, THEY NOTED THE PROBLEM AND DID AN OIL CHANGE. HONDA RELEASED TSB 18-114 IN DEC 2018 TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. I BROUGHT MY CR-V TO THE DEALER ON 01/03/2019 AND THEY APPLIED THE FIX PER TSB 18-114. HOWEVER 3 WEEKS LATER, I NOTICED GASOLINE STILL DILUTING THE ENGINE OIL. I BOUGHT THE CAR BACK AND THEY DID AN OIL CHANGE ON 01/30/2019 (FOR FREE) AND ADVISED TO COME BACK IN 1,000 MILES TO CHECK THE OIL AGAIN. I AM AFRAID HONDA HAS NO REAL FIX FOR THIS ISSUE AND THIS CONSTANT DILUTION WITH LEAD TO LONG TERM ENGINE DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE OTHER SIDE EFFECTS LIKE STALLING.

SUMMARY: THE VEHICLE HAS A KNOWN ISSUE BY HONDA WITH UNSAFE LEVELS OF OIL DILUTION IN THE 1.5 CVT TURBO ENGINE. GAS IS MIXING IN WITH THE OIL, CAUSING OIL LEVELS TO RISE. THE FUMES OF GASOLINE ARE ENTERING INTO THE CABIN SPACE AND MAKING IT UNSAFE TO BREATHE. THE ENGINE IS ALSO HAVING STALLING ISSUES DUE TO GAS MIXING IN WITH THE OIL IN THE ENGINE AREA. THIS ALSO HAS AN ISSUE WITH THE ABILITY TO KEEP THE CAR WARM AND PROVIDING ADEQUATE HEAT INTO THE CABIN AREA. THE COMPONENTS OF THIS ENGINE ARE UNSAFE FOR COLD WEATHER CLIMATES SUCH AS THE NORTHEAST. THE CAR CAN NOT WARM UP THE ENGINE SUFFICIENTLY AT IDLE AND THEREFORE WILL NOT BLOW ANY HOT AIR INTO THE CABIN AREA. THE MANUFACTURER STATES THE CAR NEEDS TO BE OPERATING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES TO GAIN SUFFICIENT ENGINE WARMTH. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, AS MANY OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, AND WE MAKE SHORT TRIPS BACK AND FORTH. FOR THE CAR TO BE COLD AND BLOW COLD AIR AND NOT BE ABLE TO WARM UP IS A FAILURE BY THE MANUFACTURER TO PROVIDE A SAFE VEHICLE. HONDA CASE NUMBER 06673515

SUMMARY: WE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME FUEL DILUTION IN THE ENGINE OIL THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS WITH 2017-18 CR-VS WITH THE 1.5T ENGINE ARE EXPERIENCING. WE LIVE IN VA. I FEEL AS THOUGH I DON'T NEED TO GO INTO DETAILS AS THIS ISSUE IS SO WELL KNOWN, PROMPTED A BAN ON SALES OF THE VEHICLE IN CHINA, ETC. THEY KEEP PUSHING BACK THE RECALL AND NOW ANNOUNCED FOR THE FIRST TWO MONTHS, IT WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE IN SELECT NORTHERN STATES. A SIMPLE SEARCH THROUGH COMPLAINTS SHOWS THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT ISOLATED TO THE NORTHERN STATES, IT MAY BE EXACERBATED BY SIGNIFICANTLY COLD WEATHER, BUT THE WAY THEY ARE ROLLING OUT A RECALL IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. IT'S UNSAFE (CAUSES STALLING VEHICLES ON THE HIGHWAY AND IN TRAFFIC, WHICH IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY CONCERN) AND CAUSES PREMATURE WEAR ON THE ENGINE (A CONSUMER PROTECTION ISSUE). NHTSA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND ACCELERATE ENFORCEMENT ACTION, E.G. MAKE THEM ACCELERATE THE RECALL TO ALL OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, NOT JUST JUST ARBITRARY CLASSIFICATION AND ORDER BASED ON WHETHER OR NOT YOU LIVE ON ONE SIDE OF A STATE LINE OR THE OTHER. IT GETS COLD IN VA TOO. THE HONDA DEALER BASICALLY TOLD US WE'RE OUT OF LUCK UNTIL THE RECALL, AND TO KEEP CHANGING THE OIL.

SUMMARY: PURCHASED NEW 2018 HONDA CR-V AWD DECEMBER 2017 FROM DEALER IN ORLANDO FL. WITHIN FIRST FEW MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP HAD MULTIPLE OCCASIONS WHERE "GAS/FUEL" SMELL FILLED THE CABIN OF CAR WHILE DRIVING. IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION BY A FRIEND (LATE SUMMER) THAT THERE APPEARS TO BE ISSUE WITH THE 1.5 L EARTHDREAMS HONDA ENGINE. AREA OF ISSUE IS OIL DILUTION BY FUEL "LEAKING" INTO IT & MIXING. I THEN BEGAN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE AND WAS QUITE SURPRISED TO FIND THAT HONDA HAD ALREADY RECALLED A HUGE NUMBER OF VEHICLES IN CHINA WITH THIS OIL DILUTION ISSUE ON THIS SPECIFIC ENGINE. WHEN I CALLED MY HONDA DEALER TO ASK ABOUT ISSUE/REPAIR, I WAS TOLD BY SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF ANY ISSUE OF THIS TYPE AND THERE WERE NO ACTIVE RECALLS/TSBS REGARDING ISSUE. WOW? THAT'S WHEN MY CONCERN LEVEL ROSE, AS ON THE DEALER LEVEL THERE SEEMS TO BE COMPLETE DENIAL/ADMITTANCE OF ANY PROBLEM. OTHER HONDA OWNERS OF VEHICLES WITH THIS ENGINE HAVE EXPERIENCED "GAS ODOR" IN CABIN, POOR PERFORMANCE AND EVEN STALLING OF ENGINE WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE. I HAVE NOT HAD A STALLING ISSUE (YET) - BUT I DRIVE VEHICLE FREQUENTLY IN MODERATE /HEAVY TRAFFIC AREAS AND CAN'T IMAGINE THE DANGER THAT COULD RESULT FROM MY CAR "STALLING" WHILE I'M DRIVING(OR MY WIFE OR DAUGHTER).ANOTHER "CHECK" TO VERIFY IF MY CAR HAS THIS ISSUE IS TO EXAMINE OIL LEVEL ON DIPSTICK. WHEN MY OIL LEVEL IS CHECKED, THE LEVEL TENDS TO READ HIGH (EVEN ABOVE FULL LINE ON DIPSTICK) AND DIPSTICK HAS STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE. NOT GOOD AS IT SIGNALS FUEL IS MAKING IT'S WAY INTO MY ENGINE OIL. ONCE FUEL MIXES WITH THE OIL IT WILL BREAK DOWN THE VISCOSITY AND ENGINE WILL "WEAR OUR PREMATURELY" OR LEAD TO FAILURE. AS OF TODAY (11/14/18) MY CAR IS NOT STALLING OUT (ABOUT 15K MILES ON IT) BUT MY CONCERN FOR SAFETY IS RISING AS HONDA SEEMS TO BE DRAGGING THEIR FEET REGARDING ADMITTING AND FIXING THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE.

SUMMARY: MY 2018 CR-V SUFFERS FROM THE DREADED [OIL DILUTION ISSUE] WHERE GASOLINE GETS INTO THE OIL RAISING THE LEVEL ABOVE THE FULL MARK. THE RESULT IS A STRONG GASOLINE SMELL, SOMETIMES IN THE CABIN BUT ALWAYS WHEN YOU PULL THE DIPSTICK TO CHECK THE OIL. THE OIL LEVEL IS ALWAYS CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN THE FULL MARK. I PRESENTED THIS ISSUE TO MY DEALER, AND THEY CONFIRMED THE SMELL OF GAS IN THE OIL, THE HIGH LEVEL AND THE FACT THAT MANY 2017-18 CRV'S SUFFER FROM THIS SAME ISSUE. THEIR UNACCEPTABLE SOLUTION WAS TO CHANGE THE OIL AND MAKE LONGER TRIPS TO TRY TO BURN OFF THE GASOLINE IN THE OIL. THEY ALSO SAID THAT HONDA WOULD BE ISSUING A STATEMENT IN THE FALL ABOUT FIXING THE ISSUE. FIRST A BIT ABOUT THE ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF CRV OWNERS WITH THIS PROBLEM UNEXPECTEDLY STALLING AND LOSING POWER WHILE IN MOTION. SOME HAVE SUFFERED ACCIDENTS. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A VEHICLE YOU'D LIKE TO PUT YOUR FAMILY IN? ALSO, DILUTED MOTOR OIL HAS TO HAVE LONG TERM DAMAGING EFFECTS ON THE ENGINE. I AM VERY WORRIED ABOUT THE LONG TERM VALUE OF A CAR THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE GREAT RESALE VALUE - THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT IT. SO HONDA ROLLS OUT THEIR "FIX", AND I NOTICE THAT THEY'RE ONLY GOING TO ADDRESS WHAT THEY CONSIDER "COLD WEATHER STATES". THEY ALSO PLAN TO ROLL THESE "COULD WEATHER STATE" FIXES OUT OVER A MULTIPLE MONTH SCHEDULE. NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL. WHAT ABOUT MY CAR HONDA. I WOULD THINK THAT HONDA WOULD TREAT ALL OF THEIR CUSTOMERS THE SAME AND WOULD WANT TO FIX AS MANY AFFLICTED VEHICLES AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUES. HONDA HAS A VERY LOYAL OWNER-BASE. I BETCHA HOW THEY HANDLE THIS WILL AFFECT PEOPLE'S DECISIONS IN THE FUTURE. I KNOW IT WILL AFFECT MINE.

SUMMARY: OIL CRANK CASE IS TOO HIGH DUE TO EXCESS FUEL IN OIL. THIS CAUSES FUEL SMELL IN CABIN AND STALLING OF THE ENGINE. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE ENGINE WILL SUFFER FROM PREMATURE ENGINE WEAR AND FAILURE DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION. THIS IS NOT A COLD WEATHER ISSUE AS MY DILUTION NEED HAPPENED IN THE SUMMER AND I ONLY DO HIGHWAY DRIVING WITH LONG DURATION. HONDA REFUSES TO FIX THE PROBLEM.

SUMMARY: DEAR: NHTSA I PURCHASE A 2017 HONDA CRV-EX WITH 1.5-LITER TURBO EARTH DREAM ENGINE. DURING THE PAST 6 MONTHS I’VE BEEN HAVING THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS WITH MY HONDA CRV-EX. GAS SMELL IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT, THE OIL SMELL LIKE GAS, RISING OIL LEVELS, CAR MAKING HORRIBLE NOISES, STALLING, LOSS OF POWER AND THE HEATERS DOESN’T WORK AT ALL IN COLD WEATHER. I FIRST NOTICE THESE PROBLEMS 6 MONTHS AGO. A FRIEND OF MINE WHO PREVIOUSLY WORKED AT HONDA SAYS THAT THE PROBLEM OF FUEL MIXING WITH OIL STEMS FROM ONE OR TWO CAUSES: IMPROPERLY DESIGNED FUEL INJECTORS THAT SPRAY FUEL DIRECTLY ONTO THE CYLINDER WALLS OR THE ENGINE NOT HEATING UP ENOUGH TO VAPORIZE GASOLINE LEFT OVER IN AN ENGINE CYLINDER. EITHER COULD CAUSE FUEL TO MIX WITH THE OIL, DILUTING IT AND MAKING IT LESS EFFECTIVE AT PROTECTING AN ENGINE’S MOVING PARTS AND OVER TIME COULD SERIOUSLY DAMAGE THE ENGINE. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS PREMATURE ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO THE LUBRICATION FUEL & OIL DILUTION. HONDA CORPORATION HAD KNOWLEDGE OF THE TURBO ENGINE DEFECTS THAT CAUSE FUEL TO ENTER THE ENGINE OIL, DAMAGING THE BEARINGS, ENGINE PERMANENTLY AND DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS ETHICAL AT ALL FOR HONDA CORP. TO CONTINUE TO SELL 2017 & 2018 CRV WITH TURBO ENGINE TO THE CONSUMER KNOWING THE PROBLEMS COULD ENDANGER THE PUBLIC SAFETY. IT IS NEITHER SAFE NOR PRUDENT DRIVING THESE VEHICLES. MY TRUST IN HONDA RELIABILITY WAS CRUSHED WHEN I NOTICE AFTER MY 2ND OIL CHANGE THE COLOR WAS BLACK, THIN AS WATER AND SMELL LIKE GASOLINE AFTER ONLY 10,000 MILES. HONDA CORP. HAD TO RECALL 130,000 OF ITS POPULAR CR-V SUV MODELS AND 294,500 CIVIC CARS FROM CHINA EARLIER THIS YEAR. RECENTLY IT’S BEEN REPORTED HONDA STOPPED ALL SALES OF CRV’S IN CHINA. HONDA ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM BUT HAS NOT RELEASED ANY RESOLUTION ASIDE FROM FREE OIL CHANGES. MY ENGINE HAS ALREADY INCURRED PREMATURE WEAR. *JS

SUMMARY: THE CAR HAS A SERIOUS ENGINE ISSUE ASSOCIATED TO THE 1.5 L TURBO ENGINE. THE ENGINE IS UNABLE TO WARM UP UP PROPERLY IN COLD WEATHER STATES AND THEREFORE IS UNABLE TO OUTPUT AN ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF HEAT THAT IS REQUIRED TO KEEP THE CABIN WARM FOR THE OWNER. THE ENGINE IS ALSO DILUTING GASOLINE INTO THE OIL RESERVOIR LEADING TO A GASOLINE SMELL WHEN CHECKING OIL LEVELS. THIS OIL DILUTION IS GOING TO CAUSE EXTENSIVE WEAR WITHIN THE OIL RESERVOIR SINCE IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE UNDER PROPER AND NORMAL CONDITIONS. THERE HAVE BEEN COLD MORNING ON WHICH I HAVE ACCELERATED AND FELT THE VEHICLE STALL AND I FEEL THE OIL/GAS MIXTURE IS TO BLAME FOR THIS DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING DEFECT OF THIS ENGINE. I'M AFRAID TO ACCELERATE IN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS THAT MAY CAUSE ME TO GET REAR ENDED AND INJURED/KILLED DUE TO STALLING THE VEHICLE WHILE IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET OR HIGHWAY. HONDA WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THEIR 2017 CRV AND NEWER SINCE THE MANUFACTURER STATES IT IS NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS TO HAVE OIL AND GASOLINE MIXING. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A BUYBACK OF THIS VEHICLE AND BE DONE WITH THIS BRAND FOR THE FAILURE TO CORRECT THIS AND POOR JUDGEMENT TO CONTINUE TO SELLING THIS VEHICLE.

SUMMARY: VEHICLE HAS 1.5 L TURBO ENGINE AND GAS IS DILUTING THE ENGINE OIL. LEVEL HAS RISEN 10 MM ABOVE THE LAST OIL CHANGE LEVEL DONE 4/19/18, AFTER 5070 MILES. SOME OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THIS TO NHTSA AS A VEHICLE STALLING PROBLEM, WHICH I BELIEVE IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THIS HAS NOT HAPPEN TO US, BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT IT COULD. I REPORTED IT TO MY LOCAL HONDA SERVICE AT GANLEY HONDA OF N. OLMSTED, OH. THEY SEEMED TO BE UNAWARE OF THIS POTENTIAL PROBLEM, EVEN THOUGH CONSUMERS REPORTS DID AN EXTENSIVE ARTICLE ON THE 1.5 L OIL DILUTION PROBLEM.

SUMMARY: MY CAR HAS ABOUT 8800 MILES. HAD THE ENGINE OIL FIRST CHANGED AT 6100 MILES. SINCE THEN, THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL KEEPS RISING DURING NORMAL USE. THE OIL LEVEL IS ABOUT 1/4 TO 1/2 INCH ABOVE THE FULL LINE. HONDA DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT NOTHING IS WRONG, AND THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS HAD PROBLEMS. WHEN I HAD THE OIL CHANGED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, THEY STATED THE FOLLOWING: "OIL CONSISTENCY WAS LIKE WATER AND SMELLS OF GAS. OIL REGISTERED OVERFILLED. OIL IS ALSO LEAKING FROM REAR MAIN SEAL AREA. RECOMMEND HAVING THIS CHECKED BY HONDA." IF YOU LOOK ONLINE, THERE ARE PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT OIL DILUTION IN THE 1.5 L TURBO ENGINE. CONSUMER REPORTS INVESTIGATED THIS ISSUE AND CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM. BECAUSE OF OIL DILUTION, SOME ENGINES HAVE BEEN STALLING WHILE ON THE ROAD. NOT ONLY IS THIS A QUALITY ISSUE, BUT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN THE LONG RUN.

SUMMARY: I HAVE FUEL IN MY OIL AND THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS OTHER REPORTS OF THE SAME. THERE IS ALSO A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT INVOLVING THE 2017-2018 HONDA CR-V AND CIVIC VEHICLES THAT ARE EXPERIENCING FUEL CONTAMINATION OF THE ENGINE OIL THAT COULD RESULT THE FAILURE OF ENGINE BEARING AND OTHER INTERNAL COMPONENTS. THIS MAY RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE OR STALLING WHILE DRIVING. JAPAN'S HONDA TO RECALL 350,000 OVER THIS ENGINE ISSUE. MIGLIACCIO & RATHOD LLP IS INVESTIGATING POTENTIAL CLAIMS OF FUEL DILUTION AND BUILDUP IN THE ENGINE OIL OF 2017-2018 HONDA CR-V AND CIVIC VEHICLES WITH THE 1.5L TURBO ENGINE. UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, UN-COMBUSTED GASOLINE ACCUMULATES IN THE LUBRICANT OIL PAN AND EVAPORATES UNDER HEAT FROM THE ENGINE, THAT THEN ENDS UP BACK IN THE ENGINE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AS FUEL. IN COLD TEMPERATURES, HOWEVER, THE ENGINE MAY NOT WARM UP ENOUGH TO EVAPORATE THE UN-COMBUSTED GASOLINE. HONDA OWNERS ARE REPORTING THAT THIS LEADS TO GASOLINE DILUTING THE ENGINE OIL WHICH MANIFESTS IN A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE CABIN, IN THE SHORT TERM, AND GASOLINE IN THE OIL THAT MAY LEAD TO ENGINE DAMAGE IN THE LONG TERM. SOME DRIVERS HAVE REPORTED THAT THE CAR’S CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT HAS SWITCHED ON AS RESULT. HONDA HAS ALREADY ISSUED A RECALL IN CHINA FOR THE SAME 2017-2018 CR-V’S AND CIVICS, BUT HAS YET TO ISSUE A RECALL HERE IN THE US.

SUMMARY: I WAS DRIVING OUR 2018 HONDA CR-V 1.5L SUV (WITH 4200 MILES ODOMETER READING AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT) ON SATURDAY, MARCH 2 ON IOWA STATE HIGHWAY 92 GOING APPROXIMATE 62MPH AND WERE 25 MILES FROM HOME WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED AND LOST ENGINE POWER UNEXPECTEDLY AND WE HAD TO GO TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC COMING BEHIND US ON THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE TO MORE THAN 6MPH AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS FLASHING WHEN ANY EFFORT TO ACCELERATE WAS MADE. WE CALLED HONDA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND WERE TOLD IT WOULD BE A 4 HOUR WAIT FOR A TOW. THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE THAT DAY WAS 16 DEGREES ABOVE ZERO FAHRENHEIT . IT WAS 3 HOURS BEFORE A TOW SERVICE ARRIVED. OUR VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SMART HONDA IN DES MOINES, IOWA WHICH WAS THE CLOSEST HONDA DEALER. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SUSPECTED THE OIL DILUTION PROBLEM AND DID AN OIL CHANGE THAT DAY. WE WERE ASKED TO KEEP OUR VEHICLE AT SMART HONDA UNTIL THEY COULD COMPLETE THE SERVICE REQUIRED. WE WERE NOT GIVEN A LOANER VEHICLE TO USE WHILE THE CR-V WAS AT THE DEALER. WE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN JULY 2018 AND IN OCTOBER OF 2018 WE RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM CONSUMER REPORTS ABOUT THE OIL DILUTION PROBLEM IN THE 2017-18 CR-V 1.5L ENGINES. WE DID NOT RECEIVE ANY INFO FROM HONDA CORPORATION UNTIL JANUARY 2019 WHEN WE GOT A LETTER ABOUT A SOFTWARE UPDATE DUE TO “DRIVABILITY CONCERNS”. DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER IN IOWA, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO SCHEDULE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT AND THERE WAS NO EMERGENCY URGENCY IN THE LETTER WE RECEIVED. WE ARE HUGELY DISAPPOINTED AND UPSET ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND CONSIDER IT EXTREMELY UNSAFE TO HAVE A VEHICLE THAT CAN STALL AT ANYTIME AND ANYPLACE. A SAFETY RECALL ON THIS ENGINE SHOULD BE ISSUED BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED WITH A STALLED ENGINE OCCURRING COMPLETELY AT RANDOM.

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER ( ROUSH HONDA - MEDINA ), AND WAS INFORMED THAT YES, THE OIL LEVEL IS HIGH, AND THEY CONFIRMED OIL DILUTION WHERE THE OIL IS DILUTED WITH GASOLINE. THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT IS NORMAL AND DOES NOT POSE A PROBLEM. I DO NOT BELIEVE THEM, I HAVE READ OF INSTANCES WHERE PEOPLES CR-V'S HAVE STALLED OUT, AND OF PREMATURE ENGINE WEAR. SUMMARY: LIKE MANY OTHER 2017-2018 HONDA CR-V OWNERS, I DISCOVERED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF GASOLINE IN THE OIL RESERVOIR OF MY VEHICLE AFTER NORMAL USAGE. IN LESS THAN A MONTH OF OWNERSHIP AND LESS THAN 1,000 MILES DRIVEN, MY CR-V'S OIL RESERVOIR WAS 0.5 QUARTS OVER FULL DUE TO DILUTION FROM UNCOMBUSTED GASOLINE. THIS PROBLEM AND ITS CAUSE HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED BY CR-V OWNERS ON MULTIPLE OTHER WEBSITES AND FORUMS. WHEN I PULLED THE OIL DIPSTICK FROM MY CR-V'S ENGINE, I IMMEDIATELY SMELLED GASOLINE AND RECOGNIZED THAT EXCESSIVE DILUTION HAD OCCURRED. I AM GREATLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE, SAFETY, AND LONGEVITY OF MY CR-V'S ENGINE DUE TO THIS DEFICIENCY. FURTHERMORE, I AM QUESTIONING THE SAFETY OF THE 2017-2018 HONDA CR-V GIVEN THAT MULTIPLE CR-V OWNERS HAVE DOCUMENTED STALLED ENGINES AND ENGINE DAMAGE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. I AM THANKFUL I CAUGHT THIS PROBLEM IN MY CR-V BEFORE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON OR BEFORE MY ENGINE STALLED; HOWEVER, OIL DILUTION WILL CONTINUE TO PLAGUE THESE VEHICLES UNTIL HONDA PROVIDES A LONG-TERM SOLUTION OR RECALL.

SUMMARY: ENGINE OIL DILUTION - GASOLINE IS LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE AND DILUTING THE ENGINE OIL. IT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO STALL. IT SMELLS LIKE GASOLINE A LOT INSIDE THE CAR IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE ENGINE DOES NOT GET WARMED UP FAST ENOUGH. THE ENGINE OPERATES TOO COLD EVEN AFTER DRIVING ABOUT A MILE DISTANCE. ANOTHER MAJOR ISSUE IS THAT THE ENGINE OIL IS LEAKING OUT. LEAKED OIL IS OBSERVED UNDER THE ENGINE WHERE THE TRANSMISSION AND THE ENGINE JOIN. THE DEALERS IN US WOULD NOT FIX THESE ISSUES OR DO NOT EVEN HAVE A FIX FOR THEM ALTHOUGH IT IS MAJOR ISSUES FOR MANY 9TH GEN CR-VS.

SUMMARY: MY 2017 HONDA CR-V HAS A STRONG FUEL ODOR COMING FROM THE ENGINE OIL DIPSTICK. ALSO, THE OIL LEVEL RISES ABOVE THE FULL MARK INDICATOR ON THE DIPSTICK. A FUEL ODOR COMING FROM THE VENTS WHEN THE HEATER IS ON. ALSO, HEATER DOESN'T APPROPRIATELY HEAT UP THE CABIN. CONSEQUENTLY, I TOOK MY CAR TO A HONDA DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THIS BEING A PROBLEM. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTICS ON THE CAR AND TOLD ME TO COME BACK WHEN NEXT OIL CHANGE IS DUE. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS FUEL ODOR PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS ISSUE WAS A RESULT OF GASOLINE LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE OIL COMPARTMENT. THIS PROBLEM IS CALLED OIL DILUTION AND IT CAUSES THE CAR TO STALL UNEXPECTEDLY. THIS MAY HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY AND RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH WHEN TRAVELING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. ALSO, IT IS HAZARDOUS TO BE INHALING GASOLINE FINES COMING FROM THE VENTS. NOT TO MENTION THE DAMAGE IT'S CAUSING TO THE ENGINE ITSELF. HONDA HASN'T TAKEN ANY ACTION TO FIX THIS SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.

SUMMARY: 3-MONTH-OLD 2018 CR-V EX-L - NOTICED OIL DILUTION PROBLEMS WITHIN FIRST 2 MONTHS. DEALER HAS BEEN UNRESPONSIVE. GAS HAS BEEN GETTING INTO OIL IN APPARENTLY SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS. PERSISTENT SMELLS OF GAS AND 'ROTTEN EGGS/MEAT' WHILE OPERATING. OIL LEVEL GETS HIGHER ABOVE MEASURING SECTION OF DIPSTICK EVERY TIME I CHECK, SMELLS OF GAS. CAR BEGINS TO STALL A BIT OCCASIONALLY. HAD OIL CHANGED AT 5K MILES - TECH CONFIRMED OIL WAS VERY THIN, HIGHER VOLUME THAN SHOULD BE, AND SMELLED OF GAS. VERY CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY NOW (WHAT IF IT STALLS WHILE IN HEAVY HIGHWAY TRAFFIC?) AND ALSO LONG-TERM ENGINE DAMAGE SINCE DILUTED OIL WILL NOT LUBRICATE AS WELL. RESEARCHED ONLINE ONLY AFTER DISCOVERING PROBLEM - APPARENTLY WELL KNOWN PROBLEM, AND WIDESPREAD - BUT BARELY ACKNOWLEDGED BY HONDA.
